To understand and use rational numbers to convert between fractions, decimals, and percents.

What exactly is a percent?

- You can remember that percentmeans “per hundred.” For example, 8% means “8 per hundred,” or “8 out of 100.”
- Most states charge sales tax on items you purchase. Sales tax is a percent of the item’s price. A percent is a ratio of a number to 100.

How do I change from a percent to a decimal?

- Move the decimal point

two places to the left.

- Drop the percent sign.

*This is the same as

dividing by 100.

How do I change from a decimal to a percent?

- Replace the % with a

decimal

- Move the decimal point

two places to the right

- Attach a percent sign

*This is the same as

multiplying by 100.

- Drop the percent sign.

dividing by 100.

- Write it as you would

read it

- The number itself is the

numerator

- The denominator is the

place value

- SIMPLIFY

Write the number as the numerator over its place value & simplify

EX: 0.45 =

- Divide the denominator

into the numerator.

- Try to divide out to the

thousandths place to see

if it’s a terminating or

repeating decimal

- Put the number over 100

and reduce

- Drop the percent sign.

*Remember, “percent” means “per hundred”

- Convert fraction to a

decimal number by

dividing the numerator by

the denominator

- Move the decimal point
