  1. Learning Objective: I will quote accurately from the text when explaining what the text means. Text=writing Accurately=correctly done Quote=what someone says in a text

  2. How will I explain the meaning of the text? I will explain the meaning of the text by accurately quoting from the text to support my answer.

  3. Partner Share Discuss with your partner where we have used quotes to support our writing.

  4. Right there questions Right there questions are questions that are right there on the page. You don’t have to infer. Usually the questions are asking who, what, where, and when. Plants need the energy from the sun to live and grow. They would otherwise not survive without sun. They use the sunlight to produce energy. They use that energy to grow and produce fruit and flowers. What is this paragraph about? What do plants need to grow? Where do plants need to grow?

  5. Quotes– words that come directly from the text. Example: “A Child was standing on a street-corner.” A Child was standing on a street-corner. He leaned with one shoulder against a high board-fence and swayed the other to and fro, the while kicking carelessly at the gravel. What evidence supports where the child was standing?

  6. Quotes– words that come directly from the text. Example: “’I have heard so much of the old witch that I will go and see her’.” There was once a little girl who was very willful and who never obeyed when her elders spoke to her - so how could she be happy? One day she said to her parents, "I have heard so much of the old witch that I will go and see her. People say she is a wonderful old woman, and has many marvelous things in her house, and I am very curious to see them."' Who is the little girl going to go see?

  7. Quotes– words that come directly from the text. Example: “’I have heard so much of the old witch that I will go and see her’.” But her parents forbade her going, saying, "The witch is a wicked old woman, who performs many godless deeds - and if you go near her, you are no longer a child of ours." The girl, however, would not turn back at her parents' command, but went to the witch's house. When she arrived there the old woman asked her: "Why are you so pale?" "Ah," she replied, trembling all over, "I have frightened myself so with what I have just seen." "And what did you see?" inquired the old witch. "I saw a man on your steps." "That was a collier," replied she. "Then I saw a gray man." "That was a sportsman," said the old woman. "After him I saw a blood-red man." Where did

  8. Why do we use quotes from the text accurately? • So you can understand what you read • Using quotes, helps you support your ideas with accurate evidence

  9. Steps for explaining the meaning of text by using quotation. • Read the question first • What is the question asking me to look for? (Is it a who, what, where, when question) On the surface question • Read the text carefully • Look for specific quote(s) that support your answer • Decide which is the correct answer

  10. Steps for explaining the meaning of text by using quotation. Herbie could barely stay in his seat. A jazz musician had come to speak to the class today, and Herbie had so many questions for him. The visitor was a short man with a wide-brimmed hat and a colorful suit. Herbie’s teacher introduced the visitor as Terrence Harris, a clarinet player. “I’m sure the students will enjoy hearing about your music, Mr. Harris,” she said. “Please,” said the man, “call me Terry.” Who visitiedHerbie’s class? “Herbie’s teacher…” “A short man with a wide brimmed hat.” “A jazz musician…” “Terrence Harris, a clarinet player.”

  11. Steps for explaining the meaning of text by using quotation. Terry talked for a few minutes about music in general. Then he began talking about jazz, and his whole face lit up. He described what was unique about jazz music, and he explained how he had become a professional clarinet player. After a while, he asked the class if they had any questions. Herbie raised his had. “What’s the best way to become a jazz musician?” Herbie asked. Terry laughed. “First, find the musical instrument that lets you breathe music through it. Next, practice that instrument every day for the rest of your life.” What did Terrence Harris talk about? “Terry talked for a few minutes about music…” “He began talking about jazz…” “He asked the class if they class had any questions.” “…the students will enjoy hearing about your music…”

  12. Steps for explaining the meaning of text by using quotation. Herbie’s eyes opened wide. “I want to start practicing right now!” he shouted, jumping out of his chair. “That’s the spirit!” Terry said, “But why don’t you wait until after school? Jazz players need to get good grades, too. When I was a young man, I didn’t think much of school.” “Really? What do you mean?” Herbie asked as he settled in his seat again. “Yes, really,” Terry replied. “It all begain when I was eleven years old…” When did Terry begin his passion for music? “he began talking about jazz…” “He came to speak to class today.” “It all began when I was eleven years old…” “When I was a young man…” “…until after school…”
