  2. The Deets: • A quiz after every fourth-ish list • SAT style—specifically geared for SAT improvement • L McCue: “There’s an app for that” • You should be able to earn an A on every one of them!!

  4. 1. nemesis • an opponent or enemy that is likely to be impossible for you to defeat, or a situation that is likely to be impossible for you to deal with

  5. 2. dearth • A lack of something

  6. 3. inevitable • certain to happen and impossible to avoid

  7. 4. discord • disagreement or arguing between people; an unpleasant sound made by a group of musical notes that do not go together well

  8. 5. demonstrative • willing to show that you care about someone

  9. 6. wistful • thinking sadly about something you would like to have but cannot have, especially something that you used to have in the past

  10. 7. brevity • the quality of expressing something in very few words

  11. 8. insufferable • extremely annoying or unpleasant

  12. 9. florid • florid language, music, or art has a lot of extra unnecessary details or decorations; a florid face is red in color

  13. 10. opacity • the quality that something has when it is difficult to understand or difficult to see through

  15. 1. negligible • too slight or unimportant to have any effect

  16. 2. counterproductive • achieving the opposite result to the one that you want

  17. 3. momentous • An event, change, or decision is very important because it will have a great influence on the future

  18. 4. magnanimous • kind and generous, especially to someone that you have defeated; free from resentfulness or vindictiveness

  19. 5. empiric • based on scientific testing or practical experience, not on ideas; a quack, charalatan

  20. 6. phobic • someone who has a strong unreasonable fear of something

  21. 7. quixotic • ideas or plans are not practical and are based on unreasonable hopes of improving the world; romantic, visionary; impulsive, unpredictable

  22. 8. foster • to help a skill, feeling, idea etc develop over a period of time

  23. 9. allege • to assert without proof

  24. 10. ascertain • to find out something

  25. 11. venality • openness to bribery or corruption

  27. 1. lavish • (adj) large, impressive, or expensive • (v) to give someone or something a lot of love, praise, money etc

  28. 2. corpulence • The condition of being excessively fat, obese

  29. 3. vex • to make someone feel annoyed or worried

  30. 4. abound • to exist in very large numbers

  31. 5. redolent • making you think of something; smelling strongly of something

  32. 6. cerebral • relating to or affecting your brain; having or involving complicated ideas rather than strong emotions

  33. 7. therapeutic • making you feel calm and relaxed; relating to the treatment or cure of an illness

  34. 8. undermine • to gradually make someone or something less strong or effective

  35. 9. forfeit • to be legally or officially taken away from you as a punishment

  36. 10. redouble • to greatly increase your effort as you try to do something

  38. 1. harangue • to speak in a loud angry way, often for a long time, in order to criticize someone or to persuade them that you are right

  39. 2. intemperate • language or behavior that shows a lack of control which other people think is unacceptable

  40. 3. conciliatory • doing something that is intended to make someone stop arguing with you

  41. 4. halting • if your speech or movements are halting, you stop for a moment between words or movements, especially because you are not confident

  42. 5. robust • A person, thing or organization is strong and not likely to have problems; showing determination or strong opinions; strong flavor (as in food)

  43. 6. facile • A remark, argument etc. that is too simple and shows a lack of careful thought or understanding; achievement or success that has been obtained too easily and has no value

  44. 7. imperious • giving orders and expecting to be obeyed, in a way that seems too proud

  45. 8. inscrutable • showing no emotion or reaction in the expression so that it is impossible to know what they are feeling or thinking

  46. 9. convivial • friendly and pleasantly cheerful

  47. 10. histrionic • very loud and emotional behaviour that is intended to get sympathy and attention - used to show disapproval

  48. 11. solicitous • very concerned about someone's safety, health, or comfort
