Provide Caring, Support and Love • Know birthday - celebrate • Call Youth when sick or absent • Help other youth develop concern for each other if absent • Make home visits • Greet and call by name • Show respect first • Give youth a chance to talk about self - Listen • Ask them their opinions- Listen • Give youth choices & power • Give unconditional love

  4. Set and Communicate High Expectations • Set Goals - Personal and Group • Keep track of progress • Accurate self assessment • Set timelines for progress • Allow youth to share and celebrate their success • Do group projects • Evaluate progress

Provide Opportunities for Meaningful Participation • Do group projects • Assign jobs and responsibilities for your projects and program • Find opportunities for youth to show off their new skills in front of other adults and youth • Do things the youths are interested in • Have some fun - Arts - Music - Sports • Do field trips • Peer mentoring and teaching

Increase Pro-social Bonding • Allow students to share unique culture, traditions, and interests • Promote differences, diversity as well as similarities • Learn to work together as a team • Learn to respect each other • Provide opportunities to share what they like and are good at • Do field trips and other activities where youth work together in society • Do community service projects

  7. Set Clear, Consistent Boundaries • Have youth help set rules of behavior • Help youth set consequences and how they can “make right” and rules broken • Help youth learn to do things by consensus • Enforce rules consistently and fairly for all.

  8. Teach Life Skills • Help youth develop protective assets • Have a protocol for resolving disputes • Teach youth to advocate for themselves • Model courtesy you wish to receive • Never assume that youth know the rules of civility • Teach and honor character development
