Juvenile Justice High School • JJHS is part of a juvenile detention center for young women between the ages of 12 and 22. • Juveniles are placed in JJHS for non-violent crimes • JJHS is under the direction of the California Education Authority (CEA) and the Division of Juvenile Justice (DJJ). • JJHS provides academic, career/vocational and character education.

Strategic Focus • Core Values: Safety, respect, purposefulness, effective resettlement • Vision: To provide wards with a similar range of services to those found in public libraries in the outside community, and to facilitate in practical ways the smooth transition to their usage of such services on release, as a means of encouraging them to adopt a positive role in society. • Mission: To enhance the quality of life for juvenile offenders by providing a welcoming, neutral, and secure place where informational, educational, and recreational needs are met.

  7. 2007 Operating Budget • 99.2% of total income comes from State Funding • $2,500 for Library Supplies each year (0.1% of total expenditures)

  8. Key Initiatives • Increase library collection by 10% by year 2010 based on class curriculum and ward preferences. • Increase book circulation by 10% by year 2010. • Stabilize employee turnover rate to 20% by year 2010.

  9. Critical Success Factors • Library Collection • Why? Because if we have it, the will come. • Problems: finding acceptable books. • Increased Circulation • Why? Because learning really is important. • Problems: Reading is so… passé.
