The preterite is used for talking about actions completed in the past.
To form the preterite of a regular –AR verb, you drop the -AR, then add the correct ending to the stem.
When you drop the –AR of the verb, you are left with the stem.
Hablar -> Habl
Comprar -> Compr
This tense can be tricky because the accents are so important and really change the meaning =
Hablo = I talk.
Habló = He/she talked.
