  2. Quotations: • Use quotations when: -- the language is especially vivid; -- The words of an important authority help your argument; --When exact wording is needed.

  3. Parenthetical Citations: • Parenthetical citations document information from sources in your research paper. • Always document a direct quotation.

  4. Parenthetical Citations: • Place it as close as possible to the quotation. • Put author’s last name and page number: (Jones 22). • No author? Use shortened article title: (“Fred Shuttlesworth” 364). • Website? Use the author or shortened title of the website (Jesse Owens).

  5. Examples: Author: “Anne Sullivan was a great mentor to Helen Keller” (Jones 42). Encyclopedia with no author: “Shuttlesworth demonstrated incredible courage in the face of peril” (“Fred Shuttlesworth” 367). Website: “Jesse Owens is one of the greatest athletes of the Twentieth Century” (Jesse Owens).
