Schedule Changes • Once courses are selected, changes are unlikely. • The Master schedule and staffing are determined by student choices being made now. • Changes are not made for: • Preference to have or not have a certain teacher. • Adding classes with your friends. • Changing your mind. • Changes are made for: • Accidental misplacement, especially level (Honors/Merit). • Sequence Error (courses that are numbered level 1, 2, 3, etc…). • Retaking a classes due to failure or for improved grade.

  3. Graduation Requirements: • 25 Credits, which must include: • 4 English • 4 Math  (including at least Algebra & Geometry) • A year long course will be awarded two credits. • Common Core may require a student to complete five credits at minimum. • 3 Science  one must be Biology, others must be labs • 3 Social Studies  Government, Modern World History, American St. 2 • MWH can be replaced by AP World History (year long with AP World Seminar) • AS2 can be replaced by AP US History • Health & Fitness • Fine Art • Foundations of Technology • Financial Literacy (rising seniors are exempt from this) • Completer Program  2 languages, CTE, or Advanced Tech • Career Pathway Electives to bring total credits to at least 25. • Passing High School Assessment Scores

APEX 1 vs. APEX 2 • APEX 1 – Current APEX 1 students must plan to take at least 6 AP classes and Philosophy of Knowledge (senior year). • APEX 2 (NEW APEX) – Requirements • C or better in AP courses • Average of 3 or better on all AP tests taken before senior year • Must take 7 AP courses or 6 AP courses + 1 (+1 options include: Philosophy of Knowledge, Calculus 3, Level 4 or higher of a world language, or an internship in an advanced field of study)

Frederick County Virtual SchoolOption 2: FLEX (Flexible Evening High) • Cost is $25 • Taken for original or recovered credit • Courses begin in cycles once a month, but the last cycle starts in February • Self paced. • Targeted to a Merit audience • Requires face-to-face attendance every Tuesday & Thursday from 6:00 – 8:00 for the duration of the course.

Frederick County Virtual SchoolOption 3: CRP (Credit Recovery Program) • No cost. • Taken for recovered credit only. • Courses begin in cycles about every two weeks, last cycle starting in March. • Self paced. • Targeted to a Merit audience. • Delivered online with an in-person mentor in a period in the school day schedule or after school.

Frederick County Virtual SchoolOption 4: POSS (Partially Online Summer School) • Cost is $200 • Taken for original or recovered credit. • Delivered through a combination of online and face-to-face. • Courses run approximately 7 weeks from late June to early August, meeting face-to-face every week at GTJMS (i.e. every Tuesday morning from 9:00 – 12:00). • Targeted to an Honors/AP audience

English (4 required) Most Common Sequence: Grade 9 – English 9 Honors or Merit Grade 10 – English 10 Honors or Merit Grade 11 – English 11 Honors or Merit Grade 12 – four options: • English 12 Merit • AP Language & Composition • AP Literature & Composition • English 101 @ FCC - This must be 1st semester and requires approval of Mrs. Devine, which is not automatic. • 11th & 12th grade electives that do not meet a requirement: • Creative Writing • Film Studies

Science (3 labs required) 9th- Algebra Based Physics Honors – or – - Introductory Chemistry & Physics Merit 10th - Biology Honors or Merit (may not be substituted or skipped for AP Bio) 11th - Chemistry Honors/Fundamentals of Chem (Merit) Electives: All electives below are weighted and require completion of Biology & Chemistry first: Forensic Science Earth & Space Systems Research (ESSR) AP Biology 1 & 2 (one period each semester) AP Chemistry 1& 2 (one period each semester) AP Environmental Science AP Physics 1 (co-req: AP Calculus) AP Physics 2 (co-req: AP Calculus)

World Languages • World Language Completer includes two levels of the same language. • High school credit earned in middle school counts toward this requirement, but colleges may prefer high school coursework for admission. • American Sign Language (levels 1 & 2 only) • French • German • Latin • Spanish • Sequence is Level 1 2 3 4 Advanced Studies Advanced Placement (AP)

Visual & Performing Arts • VISUAL ART – Art, Ceramics, Computer Graphics, Drawing & Painting, Publications (Yearbook), AP Studio Art 1 & 2 (two semesters) • DRAMA– Intro to Theater, Acting, Tech Theater • MUSIC– Guitar, Class Piano, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble (audition required), Mixed Chorus, Vocal Ensemble (audition required) (Art 1, Ceramics 1, CG 1, Draw/Paint 1, Intro to Theater, Guitar 1, Piano 1, Band 1, Jazz 1, Mixed Chorus 1, Vocal Ensemble 1-- meet Fine Art Grad Requirement)

Transition Education- • Student Service Learning (SSL) –receive credit for support to students in a high school, middle school, or elementary school • Mentor/Internship—intern with adult mentor in chosen career field • Open Campus—take course(s) at local college—FCC, HCC, Hood. Each college course can replace one block of high school coursework. • Work Study—Work outside of school for credit. Must work 7.5 hours per week for each block of high school coursework. **Students filling 3 or more blocks of schedule with work study must take an additional course-Advanced Career Development. • All students planning to take one of the above courses MUST complete a gray application and return to Mr. Zimmer or Ms. Gibson NEXT WEEK.
