  2. Outline

  3. Experiences and Qualifications

  4. Overview of NRGmagnet • NRGmagnet consults to developing and transitional countries on energy efficiency, greening, sustainable development, gender, and renewable energy programs • Consulting company serving public and private sector clients • Offices in US and Holland

  5. Where Have I Worked? USA, Thailand, Lao, Vietnam, Cambodia, Moldova, Croatia, Bulgaria, South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, Scotland, Philippines, India, Jordan, Turkey, Abu Dhabi, China, and Brazil, Armenia

  6. Professional Experience • 27 years of practice in commercial architecture designing more than 7 ml sf of buildings • 23 years of EE/RE in 21 countries • Designed national programs for many countries

  7. Why Better Buildings?

  8. Integrated Building Design Approach

  9. The Old Way…Stove-Piped Design

  10. Who’s in Charge? The Old Way

  11. The New Way Integrated Stakeholders

  12. Why IBDA?

  13. IBDA IBDA calls for architects and engineers to work as a team in order to integrate practices at the outset to achieve energy efficiency. The goal of applying IBDA is to achieve high performance and multiple benefits at a lower cost than the total for all the components combined if these were considered separately.

  14. Questions on IBDA?

  15. Demonstration Buildings for IBDA and Energy Efficiency

  16. First Experiences with IBDA Compaq Computers Worldwide This is Compaq Computers Manufacturing and Headquarters in Erskine Scotland—a very cold climate!

  17. Energy Conserving Building to demonstrate EE, RE, IBDA,code compliance in Thailand

  18. Tactics Used in Energy Conserving Building • Extensive use of micro-climate

  19. Tactics & Technologies Used • Observation area for plant engineers, walkway for general public, and thermal storage display

  20. Tactics & Technologies Used • Passive devices: evaporative cooling pond to cool façade • Hot water loops of AC system de-superheated in pond • Walkway allows discussion of exterior to students and has “visual accommodation” porch

  21. Tactics & Technologies Used • Extensive use of modeling (DOE-2 and lighting modeling) • Naturally illuminated • Use of high albedo (white reflective) materials, light shelves, etc.

  22. Tactics & Technologies Used • Spectrally selective glass

  23. Tactics & Technologies Used • Lighting: light shelves, first light pipes in Thailand, and day-lighting sensors and occupancy sensors, dimmers • Thin-tube fluorescents, electronic ballasts

  24. Results: Energy Conserving Building Building of 6,000 m2 operates on 1/3 the energy of a typical Thai building

  25. Relevance to Armenia • Use “state of the shelf” and “state of the art” contextualized to the country • Customize technologies (suit local labor and conditions) • Use engineers to solve “new problems” • Rely on researchers/students to test theories (Energy Research Institute at University= YSUAC)

  26. Discovery Tower: USA

  27. RE and EE Building

  28. Windows, Ventilation, Daylighting, Green Roof

  29. Wind Turbines

  30. Results: Discovery Tower

  31. Questions?

  32. What is Possible in Armenia?

  33. What Possible Strategies Might Be Useful in Armenia? • Air locks at entries • Insulation • CFLs and lighting technologies • Break all thermal bridges • Better architectural details for such things as insulation • Decide the energy budget and model energy use in design stages

  34. A Working Group May Be Created • University + Builders Union + Architects Union of Armenia: Develop training modules and curricula for IBDA and EE for students and practicing professionals • Builders Union will also: Provide input on builders’ perspective and “what is possible” in Armenian context

  35. Needs for Additions to Current Curricula?

  36. Because as Henry David Thoreau Said… What’s the use of a building if you don’t have a decent planet to put it on? Thank you!
