  1. Presented By: Gureet Chandhok Waqar Khan Blake Mc Cord CHEE 450: Engineering Biology Disk Stack Centrifuge

  2. DISK STACK CENTRIFUGE A centrifuge is a piece of equipment, generally driven by a motor, that puts an object in rotation around a fixed axis, applying force perpendicular to the axis. Essentially works like a clarifier providing better control over residence time.

  3. Purpose of Centrifugation • Since ours is a fermentation based bio process, the ISOLATION and the purification of the Insulin is the immediate goal once the fermentation step is concluded. • In Insulin production, used to separate desired proteins from unwanted biomass.

  4. Tricanter Sedicanter Types Of Centrifuges Decanter Belt Press Sorticanter Disk Stack Centrifuge

  5. Disks are spaced out at 2mm. Spins rapidly exerting upto 12000 G force. Solid collects at the bottomliquids move up. How does it Work?

  6. Operating Factors • Solid holding space • Viscosity • Diameter of particle • Difference in Density d2(ρp- ρ1)g vt = ------------- 18μ Stokes Law!

  7. Design Improvements Factors governing performance • Volume of solids-Coagulation and Flocculation • Settling Area-Residence Time

  8. CH-36B GOF® • Manufacturer-Alfa Laval • Type – Nozzle Centrifuge with continuous discharge • Able to handle sensitive cell cultures • Recirculation of solids • Gentle gradual acceleration of product • Minimization of shear forces preventing cell lysis • No contact with oxygen • No foaming or oxidation of product • High grade stainless steel • Steam sterilizable

  9. Design Specifications • Feed Rate-3888.81 kg/h • Viscosity of Liquid-1.5 cP • Height-3.85m • G-4300 • Speed- 2900 rpm • Sedimentation Efficiency-30% • Motor Power-26 kW • Volume- 18.5m3

  10. Co$t • Estimated to be ~$350,000-$650,000 • Operating costs extra
