  1. Energy Resources

  2. Resource Sort Cards • Divide your desk into 3 columns • Label each column as • RENEWABLE • NON-RENEWABLE • INEXHAUSTIBLE • Cut out the 9 energy resources and place them in the correct column. • Record your chart in your science notebook. Inexhaustible Renewable Non-Renewable

  3. Write these terms in your science notebook • Renewable- an energy source that comes from natural resources and can be made again in a short time period. • Non-Renewable- an energy source that comes from natural resources but takes a long period of time to be made again • Inexhaustible- an energy source that never runs out or needs to be made again

  4. Coal • Non-Renewable Coal is a Fossil Fuel-made from dead plants and animals millions of years old • Solid made from carbon • Most abundant fossil fuel in US PROS CONS -Inexpensive -Mining destroys habitats -Easy to convert to useful energy -Burning coal contributes to acid rain

  5. Image of a Coal Mine:

  6. Natural Gas • Non-Renewable Natural Gas is a Fossil Fuel-made from dead plants and animals millions of years old • Gas made from carbon and hydrogen • Gas is burned to create heat and light PROS CONS -Inexpensive -Drilling destroys habitats -Relatively clean burning energy source -Drilling techniques can contaminate drinking water

  7. Natural Gas Images:

  8. Oil • Non-Renewable • Fossil Fuel-made from dead plants and animals millions of years old • Liquid made from carbon • Gasoline and other fuels are made from oil PROS CONS -Used to make lots of everyday products -Burning of oil releases greenhouse gases

  9. Nuclear • Non-Renewable • Made from the splitting of Uranium atoms • Nuclear energy provides electricity PROS CONS -Produce no air pollution -Produces radioactive waste http://player.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm?guidAssetID=7285703f-000b-455e-a8e3-cbf7f2c4e6f4 http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/04/26/earlyshow/main1547965.shtml http://www.pixelpress.org/chernobyl/index.html

  10. Images of Nuclear Energy:

  11. Wind • Renewable • Caused by uneven heating of the Earth • Used to generate electricity through turbines PROS CONS -No environmental pollution -Can cause bird and bat deaths due -Available across the country to location of turbines

  12. Wind Energy

  13. Hydropower • Renewable • Creates electricity through moving water (river or ocean waves) • Most used renewable energy resource in US PROS CONS -No environmental pollution -Building of dams can affect animal populations

  14. Hydropower!

  15. Biomass • Renewable • Ethanol is made from biomass • Energy created through burning of plant and animal waste • Garbage, firewood, crops, manure PROS CONS -Turns trash into usable energy -Burning of certain fuels can create air pollution

  16. Biomass

  17. Geothermal • Renewable • Energy from heat or steam underground converted to electricity • Geysers PROS CONS -Geothermal plants produce no pollution -Many geothermal regions are national landmarks

  18. Solar • Inexhaustible • Converting energy from the sun into heat and electricity • Solar Panels PROS CONS -Produces no pollution -Solar panels are very expensive
