  2. Where they lived The Chumash were a Native American tribe who lived on the coast of the Santa Barbara channel. There were many villages along the coast. They also lived on four islands: Santa Rosa, San Miguel, Santa Croz, and Anacapa Island.

  3. Homes The Chumash used willow poles to make frames for their homes. They also made a hole on the top of the domes for the smoke to go out and the sunlight to come in.

  4. Foods The men hunted animals with traps and sea animals by throwing sticks and nets to capture them. Women’s didn’t hunt or make traps , they cooked and gathered foods.

  5. Clothing • The Chumash wore clothes made out of animal skin, bird feathers and plant fibers. The men wore nets to carry their water jugs.

  6. Celebrations or special ceremonies The Chumash had many special ceremonies to honor the spirits they believed in. They also had a Thanksgiving ceremony to celebrate the acorn harvest. It honored the goddess Hutash. At the ceremonies the Chumash sang, danced, and played drums.

  7. Interesting Facts • The Chumash loved to play games like kickball, field hockey and marbles. The young girls made blankets by weaving rabbit skin. The Chumash did not have money. They used beads to trade instead.
