Ramachandran and Kempaiah • Earlier: (=Medical Model):focus on individual PWDs : to bring out potential:: aids and appliances/special schools / medical care / sp transport:Problem: PWD (Disability) • Today: (=Social Model):focus on environment as a problem::we look at individual PWD needs and:we also work on other issues that have an impact on PWDs :Physical surrounding / Attitudes of community / • Can disability work be part of the on going programmes of the NGO/Diocese? PWDs do not need a separate programme. • Started work with: CMSSS and ODP::discussion with directors and persons in charge of various depts: drew up plan to say org needs to look at existing inclusion of PWDs: need for staff knowledge upgradation in disabilities and disability issues:input to governing body members on disability/mainstreaming:resource allocation • Training by ADD for all staff of diocese given • Also have one or two staff set aside specifically for disability focus work • Time set for experience: 3 years • Policy changes were made to accommodate PWDs: Eg.: women with dis could join SHGs even if they were not married (other women have to be married) • Conscious documentation of details regarding PWDs has commenced • Taking steps to make all diocesan buildings disabled friendly • As of now: PWDs are included in women progs/ also looking at specific needs of PWDs/ allocation of fund • Also: inclusion of CWDs in schools : using SSA prog for this. • Look at what is available in the area from Govt. and other sources for PWDs • Now working with 4 organizations:2 in TN + CSSS + Ekta :

Ramachandran and Kempaiah • NREGA: how are PWDs mainstreamed here: how do we address the barriers faced here? • Need to care for needs of the individual too along with the environment (Eg.: do what is needed to ensure the child takes part in the class room activities • Workers need training to do this • In inclusion need to ensure that the identity of PWDs is ensured • Twin track approach: focus on the individual and also looking at the larger picture (environment) • Function of DPO: to take up issues at the larger level • Reasonable accomodation to include PWDs in other progs
