Updates from recent important activities as per 19th February 2014 Studies/researches on SNE and IE: • Research conducted by NUDOR on challenges faced by CwDs and SEN in education in Ngororero, Gatsibo, Nyaruguru, Gakenke and Gasabo districts (26 schools); • Major challenges identified:accessibility barriers, risky geographical areas, confusion about SNE and IE, lack of technical skills for teachers, mobility of trained teachers, insufficient mobilization for parents.

  3. Updates from recent important activities as per 19th February 2014 Capacity reinforcement, advocacy and institutional support • Organization of the 14th East African institutional linkage conference in special needs, inclusive education and rehabilitation from 20th to 24th January 2014 (UR-College of education): academicians from 9 countries, members of the civil society and DPOs attended. The theme was ‘’Joining forces for inclusive education’’; • Reinforcing capacities of teachers in SNE and inclusive education (over 500 teachers, 16 tutors and 53 trainers) with the technical support of UR-CoE, ADRA & HI.

Updates from recent important activities as per 19th February 2014 Meeting special and inclusive education requirements • The SL dictionary, curriculum and teaching DVD were made available (VSO); • Interaction with CHUK to offer language therapy and audiology services: VSO; • Provision of 2 Braille embossers to REB: VSO+HI; • Measuring learning outcomes for all children (VSO) and application of norms/standards and tools in pilot schools (HI); • Disability mapping report is made available (PLAN INTERNATIONAL); • Accessibility development in 24 schools of Rubavu and Kamonyi (HI).

Updates from recent important activities as per 19th February 2014 Provision of assistive devices • Provision of assistive aids in the districts of Kamonyi, Rusizi, Rubavu, Rutsiro, Karongi, Nyamasheke, Muhanga, Gasabo, Gatsibo and Bugesera: WVI, HI and PLAN INTERNATIONAL; • Support to children with intellectual impairments Amizero y’Ubuzima supported education of children with intellectual impairment in Gisagara district through integrated education and focused on education of children of 1-6 years.

  6. Updates from WG’s Partners • UNICEF - Writea paper of assessment on inclusive education across all the 30 districts (data collection being done); - Plan for an M& E system for collecting data in schools in collaboration with the National Council for People with Disabilities (NCPD): a design under study. • NUDOR Discussion and updates on the current draft of SNE policy.

  7. Issues that need discussion at high level • How can the E&I WG put inputs in the current review of curricula to render them more inclusive? Interaction with CPMD needed. • How can we strengthen the training of pre- and in-service teachers in SNE/IE and help them upgrade? Conversation with TDM needed. • What role of the E&I WG in the current review of EFA? Dispatch roles according to goals and areas of intervention. • How can the Ministry of Education standardize practices in residential centres? Standards to be out and formal.
