  1. ¨Control- may be a “no treatment" or an “experimenter selected” group. • Hypothesis- A proposed solution to a scientific problem  • Inference-To make a mental judgment based on observations. • Theory- a proposed explanation whose status is still  not  100% known

  2. Tectonics: The study of movements and deformation of  crust on a large scale. • ¨Variable- anything that can change or be changed in an experiment • ¨Plate- a ridged layer of earth's crust that moves on the asthenosphere

  3. Divergent Plates - Plates that are moving away from each other • Convergent plates: Plates that are moving toward each other.  • Transform Plate- Plates that move horizontal to each other • Volcanic eruption; the sudden occurrence of a violent discharge of steam and volcanic material

  4. Fault: A fracture in a rock formation caused by a shifting or dislodging of the earth's crust,  • Hot spots- Volcanoes that are fixed in one place (they do not move with the plates), they can be used to chart plate motion. • Convection currents- the cycle of heating, rising, cooling, and sinking of the earth's mantle  • Seafloor Spreading- The way  new sea floor crust is created at ridges in divergence zones and  plates are moved apart to make room

  5. Reservoir: a place water remains for some time, not always something man made. • Glaciers: A chunk of frozen water that remains year round, it is considered a reservoir of water.

  6. Biological Dynamics- the way an organism must adapt to its' physical surrounding or die.  • Gyres -are large circular-moving loops of water in the ocean
