The Apollo program was part of the space race the Apollo program was created by NASA (in USA) to get the first man to the moon. There main rivals were Russia who had beet them in everything else in the space race.
The Apollo program ended in 1972 when NASA started the Space Shuttle, International Space Station and many unnamed projects.
On July 16th 1969 Neil Armstrong, Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin and Michael Collins launch into space Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin scheduled to land on the on the moon. While Michael Collins will circle the moon and exactly that happened Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon for the first time ever on the 20th of July 1969. But not every thing went to plan the over shot the site about 7km and that they didn’t know if they could walk on the there was one other problem that also meant they had re calculate what time they left because Michael Collins was already circling the moon but it turned out fine.
12 Men have walked on the moon here is the list of them.
Apollo 11- Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin 20 Jul 1969
Apollo 12- Alan Bean and Charles Conrad Jr. 19 Nov 1969
Apollo 14- Alan Shepard Jr. and Edgar Mitchell 5 Feb 1971
Apollo 15- David Scott and James Irwin 30 Jul 1971 (fist moon buggy)
Apollo 16- John Young and Charles Duke Jr. 21 Apr 1072
Apollo 17 – Eugene Cernan and Dr Harrison 11 Dec 1972
The Space Shuttle can be used more than once and the Saturn V Rocket can only be used once. While the Saturn V Rocket carries it fuel internally and the Space Shuttle carries most of fuel externally
Interesting Fact-The fuel from a Saturn V Rocket was enough to
fill 1 ½ Olympic pools
The Apollo 13 rocketsuffered an explosion in the oxygen tank Service due to an electrical fault which resulted in a shortage of electrical power and oxygen. The Lunar Module was used as a lifeboat but it was only built for 2 people for 48hours in order to conserve power for the re-entry procedures. Because the power was turned off it was freezing but they made it back safely.
Because Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin over shot the landing site the NASA
radio telescope couldn’t reach were they were but the Honeysuckle Creek Radio telescope could so if it wasn’t for Australia we wouldn’t have seen the footage of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon.
