  1. ALMA Integrated Computing TeamCoordination & Planning Meeting #4Santiago, 19-21 November 2014 Telescope Calibration Planning Dominique Broguière

  2. Presentation overview • Resources : TelCal group • Current status • Features and foreseen schedule • Assessment of maintenance workload

  3. ICT TelCal 2013-2014 : 1.3 FTE Dominique Broguiere, lead, 0.8 FTE Calibration code, TelCal CORBA components, support Jean-Christophe Roche, developer, 0.5 FTE TelCal Standalone, TelCal tasks user interface In 2014, resources slightly reduced (DB : ~0.7 FTE and JCR: ~0.4 FTE) due to IRAM priorities. ICT TelCal 2015-2017 : 1.0 FTE Dominique Broguiere, 0.5 FTE and Jean-Christophe Roche, 0.5 FTE Subsystem scientist Denis Barkats Major role to define priorities and discuss calibration algorithms Other important contribution Robert Lucas Holography package, Scientific support Potential schedule risk : Robert officially retired at the end of 2014. Probably still available, but not at the same level than today TelCal group

  4. Since ICT-CPM3 (June 2014): 2014.4 release Long Baseline Campaign : improvements introduced in ALMA-10.6 (online release) and 2014.2 (TelCal version on reduction machines) Improvements relative to Long Baseline Campaign Introduction of full “wet” path in wvr-phase correction and in antenna position determination engines Actual antenna heights used, pressure and temperature interpolated, in ATM model Phase rms calculation improved (used in “go/nogo” decision script) 2014.4 features Engines : improvements relative to dual bands observations, flags taken into account in SBR, fit robustness for totalpower pointing, bug fixes TelCal-offline : user interface improvements (phasecorrected parameter) Current status

  5. No major changes foreseen in 2015, rather improvements or fixes Work planned in the following areas: Porting TelCal on RHEL-6.5 New features or improvements in Calibration code Improvements in TelCal Tasks user interface TELCAL CORBA components Features and foreseen schedule for 2015

  6. Porting TelCal on RHEL-6.5 : 2014.6 or 2015.2 casa for “online” does not build => TELCAL does not build (ICD/SharedCode/thirdparty/casac module) . Alexis has been notified and has started to investigate on this issue TelCal code not depending on casa built with few changes gfortran-4.4 used instead of g77 for fortran code except for gildas/clic gildas/clic successfully built with g95 compiler (as in SL5.5). optional : try to build gildas/clic with gfortran-4.4 Features and foreseen schedule: RHEL-6.5

  7. Following list discussed and agreed with Denis. Probably, not complete. Calibration improvements or new features : Atmospheric calibration Implement dummy results in CalAtmosphere and SysCal instead of missing rows (ICT-3642) : 2014.6 Sideband Ratio calculation for bands separated by 90 degrees phase switching (ICT-2855) 2015.x Sideband ratio error bars (ICT-3145) 2015.x WVR Get WVR frequencies, bandwidths and coupling efficiencies in ASDM (ICT-899) 2015.x TelCal should be able to calculate wvr coefficients for several receiver bands (ICT-2909) 2015.x undefined : new improvements related to long baselines Features and foreseen schedule: Calibration code (1)

  8. Calibration improvements (continuation) Antenna position determination CSV-3148 / ICT-3844 Still some uncertainties for long baselines (~1mm). Data analysis in progress. Speed up tc_antpos task (parallelization) : 2015 ? (not a priority) Pointing, focus, astro-holography with fast scanning data Discussion started by Neil. No schedule. Flags New definition for binary flags (ICT-3171) 2015 New flag for shadowing (ICT-230) 2015 Xml flags taken into account in all calibrations (ICT-3826) 2015 Features not scheduled in 2015 Automatic flagging of noisy basebands or polarizations Error calculations to be improved in several engines Features and foreseen schedule: Calibration code (2)

  9. TelCal Tasks improvements TelCal tasks should print to screen all errors (ICT-3874) 2014.6 or 2105.2 asdmplot : display binary flags (ICT-2913) 2014.6 or 2105.2 asdmplot : determine baseband/polarization/phasecorrection from ASDM to avoid duplicated plots (ICT-3779) : 2014.6 asdmlist : display additionnal information (ICT-3400) 2015.2 Features and foreseen schedule: TelCal tasks (offline reduction)

  10. No new feature or improvement foreseen in 2015 Some work possibly needed for event/timing issue (ICT-2529) : TELCAL synchronization based on events : components are waiting for CONTROL events to prepare/run calibration engines Binary data received asynchronously (callback methods) Issue: ScanStarted event sometimes arrives too late for TelCal, .i.e after the data from first subscan. In this case, TelCal does not produce any result It seems difficult for CONTROL to send ScanStarted event before the scan starts It is also difficult to change TELCAL design to store and throw away binary blocks independently of event flows => need to find another solution Features and foreseen schedule: TelCal CORBA components

  11. Currently, in TelCal, roughly 50% maintenance and 50% new features or improvements. Corrective maintenance Still many bugs reported by EOC or softOps, often due to unforeseen situations. ~60% of total maintenance. Should decrease when the system becomes more stable Adaptive maintenance OS migration, third-party software upgrade + ACS, CASA,… upgrades : ~20% of total maintenance Perfective maintenance ~ 20% but the limit between perfective maintenance and some software improvements is not always clear Preventive maintenance Currently ~0% . Should increase in the future, replacing, hopefully, corrective maintenance Assessment of maintenance workload
