Pollution IN Chicago • Recently, the Chicago River was added to the EPA’s list of “America’s Most Endangered Rivers”, due to the 1.2 billion gallons of partially treated human and industrial waste dumped into the river every day. The cleanup would require up to $72 million in new germ-killing equipment at two sewage treatment plans and $355 million to complete the Deep Tunnel project, a labyrinth of sewer pipes and reservoirs designed to store waste and storm runoff until it can be treated. Is this worth it?

  4. Reducing Environmental Pollution • The algebraic expression describes the cost, in millions of dollars, to remove x percent of the pollutants that are discharged into a river. • How much more expensive is it to remove 95% of the pollutants in comparison to 40%? • Is it possible to remove 100% of the pollutants? • What does your calculator have to say?

  5. Rational Expressions • A rational expression is the quotient of two polynomials. Ex: • The set of real numbers for which an algebraic expression is defined is the domain of the expression. • Because rational expressions indicate division, some numbers must be excluded from a rational expression’s domain that make the denominator zero.
