NEW YORK CITY – BASICS • eastern coast of the U.S.A. • Hudson River and the East River • five parts - boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island • islands: Ellis Island, Roosevelt Island and Liberty Island • first inhabitants were the Dutch in the 17th century (New Amsterdam) • 1664an English colony

ELLIS ISLAND • 1892 and 1954 – 24 million immigrants • main immigration port • 1st and 2nd class passengers screened aboard • 3rd class transported to Ellis Island • physical (medical) examination + questioned by officials • the sick or those with criminal records could have been sent back • Isle of Tearsor Isle of Hope • today: Immigration Museum

THE TWINS • The World Trade Centre • complex of 7 buildings (Minoru Yamasaki) - firms, stores, restaurants and banks • 110-storey building (420m) • 3000 people were killed 11th Sept 2001 • two planes were hijacked and crashed into the towers which collapsed • Freedom Toweris being built (symbolic 1,776 feet high) finished 2013
