  1. FCDP status update for ATTREX2013 B. Gandrud, R. P. Lawson, Nick Krause, S. Lance, S. Woods, Pat Zmarzly, and Chris Roden

  2. Global Hawk payload locations -FCDP mounted below the Bay 25 lower surface

  3. Fast Cloud Droplet Probe (FCDP) -count & size based on forward scattering -design to eliminate/reduce shattering -1 to 50 µ diameter w/ oversize -modern high speed electronics w/ pbp http://www.specinc.com/instrumentation

  4. Data Status • R0 data submitted w/ constant TAS=170 m/s • Post-mission size calibrations agree w/ pre-mission • R1 data using MMS TAS reprocessed • Need to edit R1 data for periods w/ no MMS TAS

  5. FCDP data summary • Operational on all 6 science flights • Cloud particles observed for short periods on all flights usually during vertical profiles • 5 of 6 flights show cirrus concentrations >1000 L-1 in thin layers • 6 of 6 flights show cirrus concentrations in the 1-200 L-1 range over larger extent

  6. data flight examples low concentrations throughout flight but thin cloud during 2nd vertical profile

  7. SF06 20130301 Nine individual clouds observed on this flight

  8. addition of Hawkeye probe to GH • Measurement of larger sizes than FCDP, out to 6.4 mm • Imaging rather than scattering • gives better understanding of morphology & habit • High definition images of particles

  9. Global Hawk mounting locations

  10. Integration of Hawkeye on GH • original proposal for just Hawkeye probe but GH engineering not completed so fall-back to just FCDP for 2011 mission • Fall 2012 testing on GH strongback damaged components so no Hawkeye integration • May 2013 FRR approved but installation couldn’t meet bolt tension requirement, no Hawkeye integration • July 2013 Hawkeye installed but load cell broke, further installation delayed for HS3 mission • October 2013 scheduled but govt shutdown • Next attempt Nov 18-26 ?????

  11. Outlook -finish processing of 2013 R1 data at one second -select processing at 20Hz for high time resolution events -modeling to evaluate the impact of flight results on radiation budget & stratospheric humidity -mount SPEC Hawkeye imaging probe under GH wing by end of year ? -ATTREX flights from Guam, January 2014

  12. Acknowledgements: -SPEC Inc. grant funding from NASA Radiation Science Program -NASA Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility -Global Hawk ground and flight crews -ESPO at NASA Ames Research Center -and all of the science participants
