  6. PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS To go to 11th grade: Complete 12 credits English II, 1 Math, 1 Science, & 1 Social Studies 8 additional credits

  9. Calculating the Grade Point Average (GPA) • Add the number of quality points earned for the final grade in each course • Divide the total number of quality points by the number of courses taken • The result is the grade point average—GPA

Athletic Requirements • 85% Attendance required during the semester prior. • Under 19 on or before October 16th • Must have passed 3 of 4 courses during the previous semester • Must maintain overall 1.5 GPA • Must not be convicted of a felony • Must live in the school district and enroll no later than the 15th day of the present semester

  11. II. REGISTRATION PROCESS Course Offerings Timeline

  13. Lenguas Extranjeras • German • Spanish • Spanish for Native Speakers • Level I & II should be taken in the same year

  14. Second Languages • The UNC college systemrequires a minimum of 2 credits in the same foreign language. 3 credits are recommended. (Honors credit is earned for Level III and above). Level III is an immersion class. • Levels I and II are taken the same year • Unless students are continuing the study of a language from middle school, or wish to take second language each year of high school, they are advised to wait until Grade 10 or 11 to begin their foreign language sequence.

REGISTRATION TIMELINE February 23 – 25 - classroom presentations March 8 – students can go on SPAN to register for courses for 2010-2011 *students will receive instructions in homeroom March 19 – signed registration form is due to current math teacher or Mrs. Salpietro April 28 – students check course verification on SPAN -- 8 primary courses and 3 alternates; changes can be made June 23 – last day to make changes

PSAT PSAT-previously released SAT test Given at AHS in October Free to all sophomores $15 for juniors who sign up (strongly recommended) My college Quick Start (personalized study guide for the SAT) found at www.collegeboard.com Current 10th grade students received a test booklet, a profile sheet with the correct answers, the student’s answers, and suggestions for improvement in late December.

SAT & ACT Tests • SAT and ACT scores are used by colleges as a uniform comparison and one piece of data when making admission decisions. • Students can take the test multiple times (~$45 each time) and most colleges will accept your highest score on each individual section. • All 4 year schools expect to see a score, and many will use the scores for placement. • Not required for community colleges (used for placement if taken)

Good idea to take one by the end of junior year English, Reading, Math, Science Reasoning, & Writing (optional) www.ACT.org

SAT II Tests Subject area tests required by a few universities usually for admission, placement purposes, or advising for future courses Individual universities determine this requirement Cost – basic fee $20 + additional fee for each test Generally taken senior year or close to the completion of the subject

Take Note • For the class of 2012, the GPA required for a NC university entry is 2.3 . • The minimum SAT combined Critical Reading & Mathematics score required for a NC university is 750. • The minimum ACT composite score is 16. • It’s time to start researching colleges. • There are many universities and community colleges---find the one that fits you!
