  1. What in the world happened here?

  2. No magic, gremlins or other supernatural explanations needed! What is Science? Science assumes that the natural world can be understood by gathering evidence. Science attempts to explain the natural world and these explanations are tested using evidence.

  3. What is Science? Science Asks Three Questions- • What’s there? • How does it work? • How did it come to be this way? Sylvia Earle Marine Biologist

  4. What in the world happened here? Perhaps a natural explanation is that the continents used to be arranged differently in the past Can you fit them together in order to make sense of the evidence?

  5. Pangea

  6. Emergence of a Theory • Read • Draw a picture that summarizes each ‘chunk’ of text.

  7. Plate Tectonics

  8. Plate Tectonics

  9. Plate Tectonics

  10. Pendulum Activity

  11. Pendulum Activity Four Question Strategy: 1.What materials are readily available for conducting experiments on (pendulums) ? 2. How do (pendulums) act? 3. How can you change the set of (pendulum) materials to affect the action? 4. How can you measure or describe the response of (pendulums) to the change? Pick one independent variable from Q3 and dependant variable from Q4. Keep all other variables in Q3 constant!

  12. Pendulum Activity Present your results in a whiteboard poster. - Question, Hypothesis, Procedures, Results, Conclusion Gallery Walk (See what others did!) What is your theory for how a pendulum works (support with evidence)?

  13. Science Inquiry Features: • The learner engages in scientifically oriented questions; • The learner gives priority to evidence in responding to questions; • The learner formulates explanations from evidence; • The learner connects explanations to scientific knowledge; and • The learner communicates and justifies explanations.

  17. Evolution: 200 Years After Darwin

  18. Evolution, A House of Cards? • Anti-evolutionists claim that it is flawed and unbelievable. Evolution is a “House of Cards” and is not credible. • Anti-evolutionists want equal time given to Intelligent Design. ID claims that evolution is guided by a “supreme being.”

  19. Evolution, A House of Cards? Evolution is a scientific theory supported by multiple lines of evidence. • Fossil record • Chronological evidence • Heredity • Geographic distribution • Comparative anatomy • Cellular and genetic evidence • Experimental confirmation – It IS testable and has been tested! • Predictive (Tiktaalik)

  20. …but what about Intelligent Design? • Intelligent Design does not make predictions about how the world works. • Intelligent Design uses supernatural evidence. • Core concepts of Intelligent Design (Irreducible Complexity) can be explained / refuted using evolution. • Intelligent Design does not explain the natural evidence that we have (ie: homologies).

  21. …but what about Intelligent Design? Homologies

  22. …but what about Intelligent Design? Who is the father of… … Evolution? … Intelligent Design?

  23. …but what about Intelligent Design? Charles Darwin British Scientist Phillip Johnson UC-Berkeley Law Professor Wedge Strategy = Teach the Controversy

  24. Evolution, its just a “theory!” Science and religion represent two different ways of looking at the world. They have very different rules for answering questions. Science values skepticism Religion values faith Accepting evolution DOES NOT mean that you can not believe in God!

  25. Evolution, its just a “theory!” “When you combine the lack of emphasis on evolution in kindergarten through 12th grade, with the immense popularity of creationism among the public, and the industry discrediting evolution, it’s easy to see why half of the population believes humans were created 10,000 years ago and lived with dinosaurs. It is by far the biggest failure of science education from top to bottom.” - Randy Moore, Editor, The American Biology Teacher
