The Internet Public Library • Built by a graduate class in 1995 • Runs 9 Sun V60 servers, Linux, Open Source software written in Perl and Mason • Provides link access to more than 45,000 credentialed information resources, many specially-built exhibits, and a global, virtual information service http://www.ipl.org

The Internet Public Library… • The technologies of the global Internet present two challenges for the IPL: • Planning, development and design that brings together all the issues involved in the transformation of libraries in the age of the Internet • Provision of services and information that enhance the value of the Internet to an ever-expanding and varied community of users, while broadening, diversifying and educating that community in the unique roles of library culture and traditions http://www.ipl.org

  6. The IPL, a test bed for innovation, addresses these challenges with an active research program. Faculty and students create new models and apply new knowledge in the effective use of information technology to support better-informed decision-making. http://www.ipl.org

The IPL is a venue for … • Education • Trained 1,500 information professionals from twelve U.S. and Canadian universities; serves as the world’s leading laboratory for training online reference specialists; has advised the U.S. Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, and the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC). • Research • Source of many published articles; cited in over 1,000 articles and books; established models for virtual information provision • Service • Linked to by over 12,000 sites • Developed active Native American (www.aihecvl.org) and Spanish (www.bibliotecapublica.org) versions; French and Arabic also planned http://www.ipl.org
