  1. IS A SENIOR CITIZEN YOU LOVE AT RISK FOR FINANCIAL FRAUD? How much money do you think American seniors lose to financial fraud or abuse each year? Research indicated $3 billion, although it’s likely much higher since only one in every 30 cases is even reported. Senior citizens, whether due cognitive deficiencies, physical impairments, a general apathy, or simply a trusting nature, are easily exploited. Even healthy, self-sufficient seniors are vulnerable to anyone intent on taking financial advantage of an elderly person. If you know a senior at risk for financial fraud, consider engaging a daily money manager to help customize and administer a financial monitoring plan. These plans typically track bank and brokerage account activity, household cash flow, personal spending, credit card usage, and bill payment patterns. More comprehensive plans, which Baker DMM highly recommends to increase your peace of mind and your loved one’s financial security, may include overseeing tax preparation and filing, reviewing estate documents, and vetting service providers with direct access to the senior and/or their money. You might be surprised how deceitful an ordinarily trustworthy home health care provider, contractor, housekeeper, neighbor, or even a family member can become if they think they can steal money (or assets) without getting caught. Fortunately, Chris Baker, CPA of Baker DMM knows the warning signs and can help you proactively block senior financial fraud and abuse. If you’re concerned an elderly relative may already be the victim of elder financial abuse, call now. We’ll evaluate account statements and household records for unusual spending and unauthorized financial activities. Working together we’ll notify local authorities as required, work to undo the damage, and secure remaining assets against repeat occurrences.
