  2. CUPE BC K12 Presidents Council • Over 50 local presidents met Wednesday, Oct 19 in Richmond • The Provincial Bargaining Committee (PBC) reported on provincial discussions with the BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) COPE491

  3. Provincial Discussions • Back in June, CUPE and BCPSEA finally agreed on provincial table for provincial issues • We have insisted on this for years • Common sense prevailed: CUPE needs to bargain provincial matters at a provincial table • Both CUPE & BCTF want a provincial process for provincial matters and a local process for local matters.   4. Provincial Discussions • Eight days of bargaining with BCPSEA • Discussions are respectful, but move slowly • Time to focus on priorities COPE491

  5. Provincial Priorities Decided • Key areas for improvements: • recognition and respect for Education Assistants • job security declining enrollment & calendar changes • Public Education Benefits Trust (PEBT) programs • skills training • wages & benefits COPE491

  6. How do we get there • Provincial settlement + local settlement will create the local collective agreement, similar to 2006 process • Local presidents instructed PBC to bargain provincial settlement COPE491

  7. Provincial Committee empowered • If no provincial settlement, PBC empowered to call province-wide strike vote • No CUPE strike vote or job action now • Options remain open if necessary • Any CUPE strike vote: • first involves full provincial campaign • then takes place in each K-12 local COPE491

  8. Next Provincial Discussions • November 8 & 9, 15 & 16 • Local Discussions continue • We are regularly coordinating with: • CUPE’s post secondary sector • BCTF: provincially & locally COPE491 BP/sy COPE*491
