  2. Dynasty Rule • The Dynasty lasted for 900 years • The Dynasty started in 1027 B.C. • It ended in 256 B.C. • The founding ruler was known as King Wu • Conquered the Shang Dynasty

  3. Important Leaders • King Wu (1045-1043 B.C.)- the first Emperor of the Zhou Dynasty • King Li of Zhou (877-841B.C.)- corrupt dictator who was exiled for his poor treatment of his subjects • King You of Zhou (795-771B.C.)- final emperor of the Western Era. • Earthquake and attack destroyed the capitol • Capitol was moved east to Luoyi, beginning the Eastern Era • King Ling of Zhou (571-541 B.C)- Confucius was born during King Ling's reign • King Nan of Zhou (341-256 B.C)- Final emperor of the Eastern Era and the Zhou Dynasty as a whole.

Achievements • Invented Compass(480 - 221B.C.) • Invented the Kite - first flying object • Longest lasting Chinese Dynasty • First hydraulic engineering projects • Iron and Bronze Casting(tools and weapons) • Discovered magnetism • Used gold and silver inlays • Produced glass • Use of fertilizers and pesticides • Studied and recorded astronomy and astronomical events

Notable Events • Developed Chinese philosophies such as Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism • Referred to as The Golden Age of Chinese Philosphy • The Zhou Dynasty defeated the Shang Dynasty • Began the Mandate of Heaven • Mandate of Heaven stated that Heaven granted a ruler the right to rule • During the second half of the Dynasty, the Warring States Period emerged • This was a time of fighting between the states in the Dynasty • The State of Qin emerged victorious from this period, ending the Zhou Dynasty and beginning the Qin Dynasty
