  2. Church of the 1200’s • Church was like a kingdom with control over all of Europe’s kingdoms • Pope’s laws=canon law • Pope had his own court + diplomats • Dominion? Marriage, divorce, inheritance • Money? Tithe and church land • Weapon? Excommunication

  3. The Spanish Crusade • Muslims in Spain were called the Moors • Region of culture, education, commerce • Jews lived safely there • Ferdinand and Isabella conquer it…use Catholicism to unite Spain • “Reconquista” of 1492

  4. “Inquisition” tested converts and charged most with heresy • Sentence? death • 1492 they banish all Jews and Muslims • Thousands are killed • Pope could not control • Monty Python Skit?

  5. Growth of Towns and Commerce • Europe is developing modern towns and commerce • No longer was everything self sufficient through the manor system-manorialism • Guilds formed to control the quality and price of certain goods • All artisans formed guilds: • Wrights, coopers, smiths, tailors… • Origin of many surnames!

  6. Banking • Usury was forbidden by Church • Jews living in Europe not allowed to own land, not allowed to join guilds • Lived in separate areas of towns called ghettoes • Commerce and crafts were professional options • Offered portable wealth in times of persecution

France and England • Developed into very centralized powers • Feudalism very decentralized • Both kingdoms still Catholic • Battled each other over land • England stirs the turd first • French king dies without a direct heir • England decides to go for it • It’s called Hundred Years’ War 1337-1453

  8. Hundred Years’ War • Last of the Medieval warfare era • English longbows made mounted armored useless • Chivalry was dead • English will lose • Interesting story… • Joan (Jeanne) of Arc

  9. Peasant girl from France • Heard voices • Convinced king to allow her to lead troops • Ended up being captured by English • Burned at stake as heretic, sainted

  10. End of the Middle Ages ~1500 • World is reconnected after Crusades • Growing middle class has become wealthy • Catholic Church has taken a hit from the Bubonic Plague • Monarchies have become powerful • People start to feel loyal to their “nations”…nationalism • There is still no Germany or Italy • International relations are not too hot
