Our anti-poverty strategy aims to prevent, support, and empower individuals and families facing poverty in Dumfries & Galloway. We provide various services and initiatives, such as intensive family support, education support, and campaigns to raise awareness about poverty. Join us in our mission to create a region where everyone can lead independent, safe, and fulfilled lives.

  2. What is poverty? The most simple definition is that you don’t have enough money to meet your most basic needs – the costs of your home, fuel for heat, food and water.

  3. Our Vision People will be prevented from falling into poverty, supported to escape from poverty, and able to lead independent, safe, happy and fulfilled lives

Objectives Objective 1: To listen to people and families experiencing poverty and make sure their voice is heard Objective 2: To support people experiencing poverty to move from dependence to independence Objective 3: To ensure our information and services are easy to access Objective 4: To provide services that meet the needs of people experiencing poverty

  5. First Anti-Poverty Strategy Formed from the Results of the Crichton Institute Study – “Poverty & Deprivation in Dumfries & Galloway” Agreed by Dumfries & Galloway Council in June 2015 Anti-Poverty Officer Appointed on 28th November 2016

  6. How do we report on our Anti-Poverty Strategy’s Action Plan? Report to Communities Committee on a Six Monthly Basis 6 Performance Indicators & 52 Projects are currently being delivered

Examples of a few of the Projects we are currently delivering: Intensive Family Support Service Welfare and Housing Options Support Team Home Energy Help Project Delivery of the Homeless Improvement Service Removal of Period Poverty Free School Uniform Project Cost of the School Day Projects Support to the Poverty Alliance Annual Challenge Poverty Week every year including National Conference in October 2017 PB Tackling Poverty Funding Phase 1 & Phase 2

Tackling Poverty Nationally Formation of the Tackling Poverty National Officers Working Group Anti-Poverty Officer founder Member of the Annual Child Poverty Action Plan Reporting Project GroupSupport for the development of the Poverty Alliance’s annual Campaign Awareness Raising Week Support for the development of new Anti-Poverty Strategies within other Local Authorities in Scotland

What’s New in 2019?: Financial Wellbeing Workforce Marketing of all of our Council’s Free Events, Activities and Facilities – Through our Transformation Board PB Funding Phase 2 – Public Voting Events held in April 2019 – 25 New Projects beginning in June 2019 Poverty Alliance Get Heard Scotland Event in March 2019 New Fareshare Project to increase the number of organisations joining & redistributing surplus goods Menu for Change Project – Dedicated Support to increase incomes & reduce food insecurity

Our Council’s Continued Commitment to Tackling Poverty in our Region Former Policy Development funded initiatives from 2018/19 are now established as part of ongoing service provision/budgets: Cost of School Day £195k School Meals in Holiday/Study Support £200k Free Sanitary Products in Schools Funded by Scottish Government

Our Council’s continued commitment to tackling poverty in our region: Further Policy Development allocations in 2019/20: Area Committee Anti-Poverty Grants £200k Involving Communities in Tackling Poverty – Participatory Budgeting £200k Credit Union Development £20k Taxi Card Scheme £100k Distribution of Crisis Grants £260k Tackling Child Poverty £100k - Free School Clothing Grants Increase to £134

  12. What we have achieved together: COSLA Gold Award in Tackling Inequalities and Improving Health 11th October 2018 HMiE – Example of Good Practice in supporting our Volunteers through the Tackling Poverty Reference Group – December 2017

  13. What we have achieved together: Audit Scotland has now published its Local Government in Scotland Challenges and Performance Report for 2019. Dumfries & Galloway Council’s progress in introducing Participatory Budgeting for Tackling Poverty Budget was highlighted as an area of good practice.

  15. What has changed since June 2015? Increase in Child Poverty in every Local Authority in Scotland New Child Poverty Targets set by the Scottish Government Increase in In Work Poverty Increase in Debt Levels Introduction of Universal Credit Full Service Roll Out (May 2018)
