  4. Difference? F2F & Online • Nonverbal Communication does not exist. (smile, head shake) • You can’t tell if they’re learning • You cannot estimate the scope of the content like a book. (how big is each chapter) • You cannot estimate the quality of the course (publisher, the cover quality)

  5. Big Question Does the online format provide the same quality of education offered by a traditional campus?

  6. NSF • Cites hundreds of research reports, papers, and summaries dating back to 1928 that found no significant difference between distance learning and in-class learning.

  7. Why NSF?Apples & Oranges? • Difference in course quality • Difference in type of students • Difference in type of course • Difference in teaching methods • Difference in assessment methods

  9. 1- Analysis Exploring Your Institution’s Resources Ask your students (skills, preferences, tools)

  10. Exploring YourInstitution’s Resources • What’s already in place? (ask people who have done it) • What kind of software, hardware, and operating system is available at your institution to run online courses? • What kind of network has your institution set up and what is the profile of student users? • What kind of computer support does your institution Provide? • What kind of instructor training and support is available?

  11. You need some computer skills • Basic computer terminology • Basic troubleshooting • Email & attachments • Communication technology & tools (social networks, wikis, blogs, microblogs, RSS) • Search tools (data bases) • Web page development • Advancedmultimedia development and interactivity?

  13. 3- Course development Extensively discussed in ETEC 570 However, you need to know a few things to be able to evaluate online courses

  14. Don’t Copy- Create new • Putting your course online doesn’t mean copying your syllabus. • You have to change your instructional strategies based on the advantages and limitations of the new technologies

  15. Speeches • Don’t convert your lectures (speeches) into text word for word. • Audio recording is better video recording even better • Need to revise anyway

  28. Office Hours You don’t have to sit in your office waiting for students to show up for conferences. You can hold “office hours” on weekends or at night after dinner.

  29. 24/7 online school If school’s open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, when is school out? You should announce days / hours off

  30. Missing link? • Programmers or network specialists who don’t know anything about application programs. • Lab administrators who don’t know what a web site can provide. • A person who knows your needs and the computer programs?
