  2. Benito Mussolini • 1921+1922 came to power • His party forced him into power • Under his power all other powers were outlawed

  3. Definition of fascism • A political theory advocating an authoritarian hierarchical government (as opposed to democracy or liberalism)

  4. Fascism in Italy • In 1919, the fascist party was organized in Italy. Its members were determined to keep Italy from becoming a communist country. The Fascists believed that the state the nation must be all powerful. Rights of individuals or groups were less important than those of the state. The party took its name from a symbol of authority called a “fasces.” the fasces was a group of rods tied around an axe.

  5. Italian Expansion • African nation of Ethiopia, claiming that the Ethiopians had provoked the attack. The Ethiopians were no match for the Italian army and soon surrendered.

  6. Spain • Spain was an undeveloped agricultural society. The people who farmed the land worked in small factories were generally quite poor.

  7. Civil War • In July 1936, a revolution against the republican government was begun by army troops. Their leader was general Francisco. Franco’s followers, the right were known as the rebels, or nationalists.

  8. Vocabulary. • Fascist party- a political group advocating the ideas of fascism. • Rome- Berlin Axis agreement of cooperation between fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. • Left- liberal position as distinguished from conservative. • Right formed of army leaders, landowners, monarchists, catholic groups and conservatives.

  9. Summary • Fascism came to Italy + Spain in 1929 and mid 30’s • Spain was divide into 2 parties. Socialism and fascism. • Fascism party ended taking over Spain republic. • Spain's civil war came a preview of WWII. • The world was worried that WWI would come from Spain and destroy the world peace in Europe
