  1. 1.2 Investigations & Experiments Unit 1 Chapter 1 CPO Science Courtney Lewis Stapley Junior High School

  2. 1. Designing Experiments Process of Science Experiment—situation where we observe Measurements—observations from experiments we record and analyze Experiments start with a QUESTION Way to observe nature and see how and why things work People learn science by doing experiments to gather Scientific Evidence Scientific Evidence—any observation that can be repeated with the same results helps prove a hypothesis or lends support to a theory

  3. Egg Through a Flask DemoThe Scientific Method

  4. 2. The Scientific Method 1. Ask a question 2. Formulate a hypothesis 3. Design and conduct an experiment 4. Collect and analyze data 5. Make a tentative conclusion 6. Test conclusion, or if needed, refine question and repeat process

  5. Research Question: Question you are trying to answer through your experiment Research question must be answerable!!! Hypothesis—an educated guess, meaning you have a little background information either from past experience or from a little experimenting Good hypothesis and research question something you can test Experimental variable—you change it Control variable—you don’t change it Controlled Experiment—change one variable, keep rest constant Experiments are best when you change 1 variable at a time 3. Hypothesis Variables

  6. Independent Variable Dependent Variable does not depend on anything, usually what we control x-axis dependent on independent variable y-axis

  7. Cause and Effect 4. Experimental Techniques • If I change this variable what is the effect? • Trial—every time you run the experiment • Procedure—set of steps you used to perform the experiment • You want your procedures detailed enough so anyone can copy your experiment and get the same results • Like a recipe • Discoveries and Inventions must be able to be tested, ex. Cold Fusion

  8. Homework • Assignment 1.2 p. 17: Vocab sets 2, 3, & 4, CR 3—8, Problems 4—8 • DUE Tuesday, October 26, 2010
