  3. Healthy People • Health promotion agenda • In the third decade • Cooperative effort • Sets objectives with targets • Leading Health Indicators

  4. Vision objectives • Share a focus area with Hearing • Ten objectives (one with two measures) • Nine measures use the NHIS • One measure uses the NHANES • One measure uses the ASOII and/ or the NEISS • Only one objective has data now, others are “developmental”

  5. Objective 28-1 Increase the proportion of persons who have a dilated eye examination at appropriate intervals 2002 NHIS question: When was the last time you had an eye exam in which the pupils were dilated? This would have made you temporarily sensitive to bright light.

  6. Objective 28-2 Increase the proportion of preschool children aged 5 years and under who receive vision screening 2002 NHIS questions: • Has {child’s name} EVER had {his/her} vision tested by a doctor or other health professional? • When was {his/her} vision last tested?

  7. Objective 28-3 • Visual Acuity Test for distance vision • Objective Refraction/Keratometric evaluation • 1999-2000 NHANES data released this spring to collaborators; to public in June Reduce uncorrected visual impairment due to refractive errors

  8. Objective 28-4 Reduce blindness and visual impairment in children and adolescents aged 17 years and under. 2002 NHIS question: Does {child’s name} have any trouble seeing? (If age 2+ years:) even when wearing glasses or contact lenses?

  14. 2002 NHIS questions for objectives 28-5, 28-6, and 28-7 • Have you EVER been told by a doctor or other health professional that you had diabetic retinopathy … glaucoma … cataract? • DURING THE PAST 12 MONTHS, have you had diabetic retinopathy … glaucoma … cataract?

  15. Objective 28-8 • Data presently being collected by two surveys: • BLS ASOII • NEISS • Two measures? Reduce occupational eye injury

  16. Objective 28-9 Increase the use of appropriate personal protective eyewear in recreational activities and hazardous situations around the home

  17. 2002 NHIS questions for objective 28-9 (children 6-17 years) • Does {child’s name} participate in sports, hobbies, or other activities that can cause eye injury? This includes activities such as baseball, basketball, soccer and mowing the lawn. • (If yes), When doing these activities, on average, does {he/she} wear eye protection always, most of the time, some of the time, or none of the time?

  18. 2002 NHIS questions for objective 28-9 (adults 18 years and older) • Outside of work, do you participate in sports, hobbies, or other activities that can cause eye injury? This includes activities such as baseball, basketball, mowing the lawn, woodworking, or working with chemicals. • (If yes), When doing these activities, on average, do you wear eye protection always, most of the time, some of the time, or none of the time?

  19. Objectives 28-10a and 28-10b • Increase the use of rehabilitation services by persons with visual impairments (28-10a) • Increase the use of visual and adaptive devices by persons with visual impairments (28-10b) Increase vision rehabilitation

  20. 2002 NHIS questions for objectives28-10a and 28-10b • 28-10a: Do you use any vision rehabilitation services, such as job training, counseling, or training in daily living skills and mobility? • 28-10b: Do you use any adaptive devices such as telescopic or other prescriptive lenses, magnifiers, large print or talking materials, CCTV, white cane, or guide dog?

  21. When are data expected? • Objectives tracked by the 2002 NHIS will have data by 2004 • The objective tracked by the 1999-2000 NHANES will have data in 2002 • The objective tracked by the ASOII and/ or the NEISS will have data in 2002

  22. Future for tracking the objectives looks bright • All vision objectives will have baselines by the midcourse review (2004) • State data may be possible if a BRFSS optional vision module can be developed
