  1. Phase II Tracker Upgrade SessionIntroduction • Purpose of the session • Change of perspective after Chamonix • Possible implications for the Phase II R&D • Topics covered (and not covered) • Outlook and future meetings

  2. LHC perspectives (some highlights from the Chamonix Workshop and further meetings) • Plans for LHC developments evolving since last year. New/different options under consideration: • Drop upgradeof IR phase I (“merge” with what was the Phase II upgrade) • Plans for rejuvenation/improvement of injector chain under development • Drop construction of new injectors (SPL/PS2) • This used to be the core of the phase II upgrade! • LINAC 4 progressing well • Two major stops during this decade • Long shutdown from late 2011 to early (??) 2013 • Upgrade of all splices ® move to high energy • Upgrade of collimation system ® increase luminosity • One more relatively long shutdown later (2015 or beyond, to be agreed) • Integrate LINAC4 ® increase luminosity • Looking further • Increasing the luminosity beyond the original design figure is obviously still the goal • A lot of R&D needed; the limitations of the system are still not known • If high intensity is achievable, optimizing the integrated luminosity requires luminosity leveling

  3. Implications for the Tracker • Design luminosity (≈1034) will be (hopefully) reached around the end of the decade • The Tracker as it is (i.e. if it does not degrade spontaneously) will work perfectly well, till after 2020 • A possible ultimate scenario mentioned in Chamonix was 5×1034 @ 40 MHz (with luminosity leveling) corresponding to 100 mb / BX • 5×1034 is an optimistic figure • But beware: the 20 MHz option is not dead! • 100 mb / BX is a good reference to use • … but we must be ready to adapt/defend our plans if reality turns out to be substantially different (e.g. ultimate luminosity not much larger than 1034) • Learn the lesson from the “phase I” story: start exploring all aspects and possible advantages of a Tracker upgrade, in different scenarios

  4. The phase II Upgrade • Timescale for a full Tracker Upgrade moved from 2016÷2017 (initially advertised) to 2020 or later. • Even if the LHC luminosity would not increase as we hope, it would probably still make sense to assume 2020÷2022 as time frame for a possible full Tracker upgrade. • What are the consequences? • The project now makes much more sense • For the present Tracker in 2000 we had: • ASICS developed • Links developed • Electronics architecture fully defined • Started design of hybrids, interconnection electronics, finalize mechanics, etc… • Installed the tracker in 2007 • We will not go much faster (If anything, will need even more strict quality control and longer commissioning) • We have a couple of years to keep exploring technologies • Aim at defining the system and have basic blocks in hand by 2013÷2015

  5. Today’s meeting • Review of major R&D lines • Within available time… • Emphasis on components rather than system design • Did not include power and cooling • Have important deliverables for phase I • Shall open the discussion on further developments (possible/needed) for phase II • Update of previous presentations/discussions in Tracker weeks or Upgrade Project Office • Later on, need to start putting some focus also on pixel phase II upgrade

  6. Outlook and future meetings • Next big meeting in Elba at the end of May • Try to define short/medium-term goals for present R&D lines • Make progress in a relatively well-defined framework • At the same time avoid freezing the system too early • Open the discussion today, and continue in Elba
