Quickwrite • The title of the poem we are about to read is “Oranges”. Titles often give readers hints about what is important in the poem. Write down everything you can think about “oranges” • Smell, places they grow, when you eat them, how they taste, where do you get them from, who do you get them from, thoughts about the color, thoughts about the texture, etc…

Mark the Text • Symbols, in poetry, are objects that represent something Not tangible (love, optimism, poverty, inspiration, pride, anxious) • Underline three images of light • In the margins, explain what you think these images symbolize
Write an Analytical Paragraph • Choose the straight away, hill, or mountain to develop a well-written paragraph addressing the following prompt: The orange is the recurring symbol in this poem. Describe how the symbolism for the oranges changes. Use three examples from the text and explain.
