  1. SPS Intercom and Public Address P.Nouchi – P.CharrueBE/CO With input from BE/OP, GS/ASE and IT/CS

  2. Description • Intercom is a complete voice communication infrastructure deployed in the SPS and Experimental Areas • Bi-directional audio connection from the SPS-CCC to the SPS tunnel, the BAs and the EAs • Based on a very old cabling and hardware infrastructure • PublicAddress allows to broadcast audio messages in the SPS tunnel, BAs or EAs • Based on a very old cabling and hardware infrastructure • IMPORTANT: This infrastructure is NOT designed and must not be used for safety. P.Charrue - IEFC

  3. The SPS operators view • PA and Intercom is extremely useful and used • It allows for an efficient communication means between the CCC and the different SPS locations (Tunnel, BAs, EAs) • Very useful during SPS-Magnets patrol • Sometimes gives an impression of Safety • Operation is much more efficient with PA and Intercom, especially when organising accesses P.Charrue - IEFC

  4. 3 Possible solutions • BE/CO supports the EXISTING infrastructure • Deploy in the SPS the new GS/ASE solution that is under installation in the PS • Deploy the new IT Safety Radio Communication Network currently under deployment all around CERN P.Charrue - IEFC

  5. BE/CO Support • BE/CO is supporting the current installation with a stock of material recuperated from old installations • No more extensions nor new installations are possible • The cabling cannot evolve but we have enough amplifier/micro/loudspeakers/power supplies • BE/CO has enough spare parts and recuperated material to support the EXISTING infrastructure for the coming 2-3 years P.Charrue - IEFC

  6. GS solution • GS/ASE is deploying a new Access infrastructure for the PS • Under deployment now, the whole PS will be covered for the 2014 restart • This new Access system includes new PA and Intercom facilities • PS project will be terminated after LS1 • SPS project could be initiated in 2014 for a deployment during LS2 P.Charrue - IEFC

  7. IT Safety Radio Communication Network • Complete communication infrastructure deployed around the whole CERN perimeter • Both surface installations and underground tunnels will be covered (and NO active equipment in the tunnels) • Offers Intercom facility • PA is done via broadcasting message to defined sets of receivers • Offers additional safety features (Geo-localisation and lone-worker protection) • Direct connection with the CERN Fire Brigade P.Charrue - IEFC

  8. P.Charrue - IEFC

  9. Proposition • BE/CO continues to support the current installation • BE/CO and IT/CS organise a test period now: • Installation of a specific control console in the SPS bay • Purchase a few terminals to be used in the SPS BAs and SPS tunnel • Need for a budget code for ~10KCHF • 4 months of test (including a complete SPS tunnel magnet patrol already foreseen early March 2013) • Report back in IEFC Mid-March 2013 P.Charrue - IEFC
