  2. The primary function of quotation marks is to set off and represent exact language . • We most often use them when working with outside sources, successful use of quotation marks is a practical defense against accidental plagiarism and an excellent practice in academic honesty.

  3. 1St : Double quotations for quotation and single quotations for words inside. Example : She said, "Hurry up." She said, “He said, ‘Hurry up.’”

  4. 2ndThree dots… Call as Ellipsis Example : "I stopped believing in Santa Claus when…he asked for my autograph."

  5. 3rdUse quotation marks to set off a direct quotation only Wrong example : Thomas Edison declared that "Genius was one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration."

  6. First, drop the quotes: Thomas Edison declared that genius was one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration.

  7. Second, rewrite the sentence According to Thomas Edison, "Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration."

  8. Third, move the quotes so that they enclose only Edison's exact words: Thomas Edison declared that genius was "one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration".
