  19. Italy Recap • Before 1945 most of the Italian population was in some form of agriculture. • Since 1945, Italy industrialised rapidly, particularly in manufacturing and engineering to the point where less than 5 per cent of the population is now working in agriculture. • The majority of these live in the southern part of Italy, which is poorer than the centre and northern part of the country. • The tourism industry now enjoys a major position in the economy • Italy continues to rely heavily on the export of manufactured goods, particularly of industrial machinery, aircraft, vehicles, chemicals, electronics, textiles and clothing.

  20. Rural Settlement • Most people in The Mezzogiorno live in cities and villages. • Very little dispersed settlement. • Most villages are clustered around the church. • People have been pushed away from the bad land.

  21. Urban Settlement • 4 large cities in the Mezzogiorno • Naples = 1.3 million • Palermo = 700,000 • Catania = 340,000 • Bari = 332,000

  22. Population • Population growth rate is gradually slowing. • Family sizes are larger in the Mezzogiorno than in the north. • Life expectancy has increased. • Majority of people are between 20 and 65.

  23. Migration • Internal Migration: People in Italy move from the south to the north. • People move to: Rome, Milan, Turin and Genoa. • Though things are changing and people are returning to the south as the area is improving.
