  7. From POW to Politician The Hoa Lo Prison, dubbed the Hanoi Hilton by the American POWs held there during the Vietnam War. Sen. John McCain spent 5 ½ years as a POW after being shot down in 1967. (His arms and one leg were broken in the crash, and he was beaten by his captors.)

  8. Resentment Actress & anti-war activist Jane Fonda traveled to Hanoi in 1972 and was accused of being un-American. Her detractors called her “Hanoi Jane,” and many still dislike her today.
