Setting the scene… • Psychology became very poignant after the Second World War with a number of war veterans returning home suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, (PTSS) not that it had been diagnosed as that at that time. • There was a significant increase in the number of patients being referred to psychologists, and counsellors so therefore an increase in the number of persons needing qualifications in these roles. • Basically this was classified as negative based psychology, patients’ were “broken” and were seeing or having counselling to be mended or “fixed” so they could get back into mainstream lifestyles.   6. As we see it now… • Counseling is the art of helping basically healthy people work through the normal developmental issues, decisions, problems and even crises that come to all of us in life. Some examples: choosing a career, losing a parent, divorce. • Sometimes it just helps to have somebody to talk to, somebody whose compassion we trust and whose wisdom we respect.  Judy Harrow CHCCSL501A Work within a structured counselling framework

(Cont’d) • Establish a safe, trusting environment  • CLARIFY: Help the person put their concern into words. • Active listening: find out the client's agenda  a) paraphrase, summarize, reflect, interpret  b) focus on feelings, not events  • Transform problem statements into goal statements.  • Explore possible approaches to goal  • Help person choose one way towards goal  DEVELOP A PLAN (may involve several steps)  • Make a contract to fulfill the plan (or to take the next step • Summarize what has occurred, clarify, get verification  EVALUATE PROGRESS  9.
