  2. Introduction • Discretionary Housing Payment who can apply? • Who to contact for advice?

  3. Who can be helped with DHP • Discretionary Housing Payment are available to people who are receiving Housing Benefit or Council Tax Benefit,But need extra money to cover the shortfall in their Housing and council tax costs.

  4. How DHP is Assessed • Discretionary Housing Payment is paid if claimant is already getting Housing Benefit or council tax benefit but do not get the full amount because: • Other adults are living in the house. This does not include their partners but does include their grown up children. • Income is to High or The rent officer thinks their rent is to High

  5. The Information Required • We also need to know why the applicant need extra help to meet their housing cost and council tax cost.They should give information like. • List down Expenditure,Include debts Give information on Disability and Ill Health • Are they in threat of losing their home.This could be due to change of circumstances. And clients with exceptional cost.

  6. How are the Claimants Informed • We would write to the claimant to tell them whether or not their claim has been successful • If awarded a Discretionary Housing Payment we let them know how much weekly they will get and how long the payment will last. • In Some circumstances the payments are backdated.

  7. How Long does the claim go on for • The payments are for limited period and claimant can re-apply again when the payment stops • DHP are paid at the same time and in the same way as Housing Benefit/Council Tax Benefit.This maybe to the claimant or to the Landlord.

  8. Can Claimants Appeal • There is no right to appeal under the rules for these Payments. • However ,Claimants can ask to have a review when circumstances change. • Claims can only be backdated to the beginning of April.New financial Year.
