  1. Mrs. McGarrity’s Classroom Procedures

  2. Entering the Classroom • You are not to stand or around in the hallway • Enter the classroom quietly without running or pushing • Take your assigned seat • Read the bellwork assignment from the board • Work quietly and by yourself, unless instructed otherwise • Wait for further instructions from the teacher

  3. If you are late You are late to class if you are not inside the classroom when the bell rings. If you are late to class you must: • Walk in quietly making as little noise as possible. • Take your assigned seat. • Join the activity in progress. If you don’t know what the class is doing raise your hand until the teacher sees you. • Continue working (waiting) quietly until I get to your desk. Consequences- If you are tardy to 1st block- Study Hall If you are tardy during any other block, you will be counted as tardy

  4. If you absent • It’s the student’s responsibly to gather all makeup work or late work when they return back to school. Missing work can be found in the make-up work folder • All late or missing work should be completed and turned in no later that 3 class periods after their return. • Students must collect make-up before school, except for Wednesday. This is order to not disturb class time. • Students will be expected to take all missed quizzes upon their arrival back to class. • Students who miss a test should schedule a time to take their test before school. This test should be made up before their next unit test

  5. Missing/ Late work • All late work will be marked as a zero and late until the assignment is turned in. • All late work will be counted off 20 points per class period • All missing assignments, quizzes, projects, and test will be marked as a zero until the assignment is made up

  6. Retakes and Redos What qualifies a student for a retake The science department defines substandard work as a 69 or below. Only tests with scores of 69 or below on summative tests are eligible for a redo Teacher discretion supersedes all parts of this policy. Page 23 in the Rankin County student handbook states, “ The opportunity to redo can be rescinded if a student abuses the opportunity.” What can disqualify a student from a retake • All formative work must be turned in prior to the unit test. (Once the unit test has been given, no formative assignments will be accepted.) • Zeros on formative work will disqualify a student from a summative retake.

  7. Retakes and Redos How many can a student retake? No more than 2 summative retakes per nine weeks What must a student do before the retake can occur Teacher approved remediation which consists of 3 consecutive mornings (this may include morning tutoring and/ or extra assignments). This must be scheduled within one week of receiving graded work When will a student retake a test? The test will be scheduled on the 4th consecutive morning before school automatically Parents may be notified of retake

  8. Turning in Assignments • The teacher will sometimes collect homework, group-work, or individual work. • All homework must be turned in the homework deposit by the first 5 minutes of class. All homework turned after the first 5 minutes of class will be counted as late. (-20 points) • Headings should be on the left top corner on the top right corner of your paper. It should include the following: Name first and last, block, and date. Papers without the proper heading will be counted off 5 points. Papers that can not be identified will be result in a zero.

  9. Extra Credit Assignments • Every time you take a test you have a chance to earn extra credit. • If you make a handwriting study guide using all the terms and objective from your note essentials, you will receive 5 bonus points. • Only completed note essentials will received 5 bonus points • Note Essentials can be found on my website. http://www.rcsd.ms/~nicole.mcgarrity/

  10. Getting your Attention There may be times when I may need to get everyone’s undivided attention so that I may give directions, explanations, answer group questions, etc. or if the noise level gets too loud. When I need everyone to stop talking and pay attention to me:I will say “if you can hear me now, clap once,if you can hear me now, clap twice, ….” • Follow the instructions ( ex. Clap once, clap twice, stomp 1 time) • Stop talking and look at me. • Wait for me to speak. • This procedure should take us no more than 10 seconds.

  11. Visitors When we have someone come into our classroom who is not part of our class (teacher, administrator, student, parent) you are expected to follow the same classroom rules and procedures. • You are expected to be polite to the visitor. • Do not talk to the visitor unless he/she is talking to you directly. Continue working on your assignment as usual. • If the visitor needs to speak to me privately, I expect you to remain in your seat without talking until I finish speaking with the visitor.

  12. When you finish your assignment early If you finish all of your assigned work early you may a) read independently b) work on an assignment for another class c) write d) draw e) work on extra credit. DO NOT TALK OR DISTURB OTHERS.

  13. Restroom Policy In order to control the amount of traffic leaving my classroom a maximum of 3 people may go to the restroom during any given period. You may go to the restroom only if: • You have finished all of your assign work • The class is working on individual seatwork ( no passes during teacher or guest lecture) • You have not abused this privilege in the past • If permission is given to go to the restroom you must provide your own planner and have the teacher sign it • Your teacher is not a mind reader, please notify her about medical issues before they become an issue Consequences: • Any student out for more than 5 minutes will be referred to the office

  14. Pencils • You are expected to bring a pencil and/or pen everyday ( bringing a back up is always encourage) • If you for some reason you forget to bring a pen or pencil, you may borrow a pencil from your teacher. Like all loans you must put up collateral for receiving a pencil. Acceptable collateral is one of the following items: keys, phone, and wallet. All collateral will be returned at the end of class once the pencil is returned safely in one piece. • The pencil sharpener is to only be used before, after class, or during transition time

  16. Consequences • Everything we do in life has consequences. If you choose to run a red light, you must accept the consequences that it brings (traffic ticket, taking someone’s life, crashing your car, etc). Consequences are the things that happen to you when you choose not to obey a rule. These are the following consequences in this classroom. 1st offense: Verbal Warning 2nd offense: Teacher conference in the hall or after class 3rd offense: Call or email to parents 4th offense: Thursday Morning detention before school and a call home 5th offense: office referral For behavior that is deem severely inappropriate, such as verbal attacks towards another student or a teacher and/or physical violence may bypass consequences of 1st- 4th offense.

  17. Food, drinks, and gum • Although Custodial Staff are conscientious and work extremely hard, it is difficult to achieve optimal standards of cleanliness when food and drinks are allowed to be consumed in the classrooms. • When food and drinks are consumed in classrooms, they spill, soiling the floor and carpet. As a result, spills are tracked throughout buildings, further complicating the cleaning program. • Restricting food and drink reduces custodial workload, promotes cleanliness, prevents damage to carpet and floors, and ultimately conserves school funds and resources. • Food, drinks, and gum are prohibited from being consumed in class. All food, drinks, and gum consumed in class will be deposed of willing or otherwise.

  18. Cell phones • Before entering class please ensure cell phones are turned off and stored in your backpack, purse or other safe place. • Cell phones cannot be used to determine the time or for texts or for emergencies. • If the teacher sees or hears your phone, then it will be taken up and turned into Mrs. Byrd. • From time to time we will use cell phones for learning purposes, if you use your cell phone in any way other than instructed, it will be taken up.

  19. Dress Code • Holes in jeans should be below the knee • All undergarments should be covered • Shorts should be no more that 3 inches above the knee • No spaghetti strap shirts • Clothing should not have inappropriate messages

  20. Class Dojo • Class Dojo is a point system for behavior • When students work hard, participate, help others, and turn in homework they will receive a positive behavior point. • When students are interrupting class, disrespectful, out of their chair, or not focused they will receive a negative point.
