AFCEA Overview • AFCEA = Armed Forces Communication & Electronics Association • Founded in 1946 – 31,000 current members • Serves as a bridge between government requirements and industry capabilities • Represents top government, industry, and military professionals in the fields of: • Information technology • Communications • Intelligence • A non-profit international association dedicated to supporting global security by providing and encouraging a close cooperative relationship among civil government agencies, the military and industry

AFCEA SC Lowcountry Chapter • One of 140 chapters worldwide • Membership comprised of nearly 200 professionals from government and private industry • Gives engineers, programmers, managers, government officials and military personnel continuing opportunities to exchange ideas • Conducts luncheons and industry information forums in conjunction with SPAWARSYSCEN Charleston • Provides approximately 15 $3000 scholarships annually to students in the “hard” sciences

  4. Annual Scholarship Program • Awarded to qualifying high school seniors pursuing engineering & science degrees • Selection Criteria • Class Rank/GPA • College Degree Program • SAT/ACT Scores • Community Service • Financial Need • CDCA financed two scholarships in 2008

Chapter Activities • Host Monthly Luncheons w/Guest Speakers • Bi-Annual Golf Tournaments to Raise Funds for Scholarships • This year: April 22 & October 21 • SBIOI XII and XIV, respectively, will follow the tournaments • Science Teaching Tools Program • Support Math & Science Teachers (MaST) Program • Support to Local Civic & Professional Activities • Collaborate with CDCA • Participate in the Charleston Industry Council

Who Am I? • Currently with Integrated Communication Solutions (ICS) Inc., a small business • Have been supporting SPAWAR since 1998, previously with SRC, Booz Allen, and WareOnEarth Communications • Associate Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) and a candidate for Treasurer • Have been on the AFCEA Board since 2006

Who Am I? • Currently with Integrated Communication Solutions (ICS) Inc., a small business • Have been supporting SPAWAR since 1998, previously with SRC, Booz Allen, and WareOnEarth Communications • Associate Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) and a candidate for Treasurer • Have been on the AFCEA Board since 2006

Ask not what AFCEA can do for you… • Provides a forum to collaborate with your government and industry colleagues in matters pertaining to C4I/C5I • Serves as an outlet to showcase your company’s capabilities to the community • Annual source book • Provides a means for keeping abreast of the latest trends in the market • SIGNAL Magazine • Other monthly paper and online publications

  10. …but what you can do for AFCEA • Become a corporate sponsor • Encourage employees to become members to participate and to learn • Become involved in the activities of the chapter • Bring your professional and corporate experience to the forum for the mutual benefit all members

Ongoing Goals • Improve relationship with CDCA: “Complement and Supplement”; leverage strengths of each • CDCA: local, Charleston-based • AFCEA: International • Bring National AFCEA assets to Charleston • Education, Symposia, Demonstrations, etc. • Increase government (SPAWAR) participation in AFCEA • Encourage general membership input to meetings, organization, and programs • April-May 2008 Questionnaire
