  1. October 2, 2012 • Drill: What feeling did the Congress of Vienna fear would rise in the French? Agenda Drill Unit Breakdown Bingo The Beatles answer is 27 • Nationalism

  2. What I am not looking for… • Napoleon was a tyrant who was self-centered and ruled unfairly. He crowned himself emperor by taking the crown from the pope. For these reasons, I believe he is a tyrant.

  3. Better… • Napoleon was a tyrant as the emperor of France. Napoleon rose to power by killing millions, as he deliberately said that he would think nothing of losing one million Frenchmen in battle. Those he lost in battle were also drafted and were often times not native Frenchmen. Napoleon also overtook the throne twice by seizing power in a military coup.

  4. Even better than that... • Napoleon Bonaparte became emperor of France by staging a coup de tat, but proved to be a heroic leader for the French. The Napoleonic Code completed the French Revolution by instilling Enlightenment ideals of equality into French Society. With his imperialist policy, he was also able to improve the standard of living and provide for the needs of the French. In addition, taxes were lowered and fairer.

  5. The French Revolution • Causes • The Enlightenment • Dissatisfaction with the Estates System • Louis XVI was a weak leader and a bad spender • Spent tax dollars (franks) on personal items • American Revolution (thank you) • Deficit Spending • Second estate gets taxed and calls for Estates General

  6. The French Revolution • At the Estates General • All Estates meet at Versailles • Third Estate (Bourgeoisie and the poor) sick of being outvoted by Nobles and Clergy • Plus they’ve listened to Enlightenment ideas • Claiming to represent the people of France (98%)… • Locked out of meeting • Go to Tennis Court and form national assembly

  7. National Assembly • 3rd Estate storms the Bastille • Enters prison to get the weapons • Writes the Declaration of the Rights of Man • Their Declaration of Independence • Women storm the Castle because they are starving • New government established; they find a fleeing Louis XVI and behead him

  8. National Assembly • Not everyone likes the new monarchy • Sans-Culottes and Jacobins want a republic and riot • Robespierre takes power out of being head of the Committee of Public Safety • Kills 16,000 in the Reign of Terror • 9 Months • Killed by Guillotine • ENTER NAPOLEON

  9. Napoleon… • Napoleon returns from wiping the floor with the rest of Europe as a hero and seizes power • He does a lot of good for the people, but also kills millions • Crowns himself emperor • Napoleonic Code • He abdicates his thrown and is put in Exile • Escapes Exile • Gives it another go at Waterloo…loses

  10. Napoleon… • …is exiled again on St. Helena, already sick, dies • Congress of Vienna divides up the land he conquered • Switzerland created • Germanic States united • The old monarchies put back in charge • 100 years of peace!
