Biographical details • John Esposito was born into a Roman Catholic family in Brooklyn, New York on 19 May 1940. • He received a masters degree in theology at St. John's University. • Earned a PhD at Temple University, Pennsylvania in 1974. • He is a Professor of International Affairs and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University, USA. • Well-known as a promoter of strong ties between Muslims and Christians, Esposito is also the Director of the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding.

Engagements and Achievements • 1988: President of Middle East Studies Association of North America : President of the American Council for the Study of Islamic Societies • 1999-2004: Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Center for the Study of Islam & Democracy : Member of the World Economic Forum’s Council of 100 Leaders and the High Level Group of the U.N. Alliance of Civilizations • 2005: American Academy of Religion’s Martin E. Marty Award for the Public Understanding of Religion :Pakistan’s Quaid-e-Azam Award for Outstanding Contributions to Islamic Studies • 2003: School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University Award for Outstanding Teaching

  8. WHAT EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT ISLAM • This book explains various questions raised by the westerners regarding Islam. • It is divided into six sections. • Section One discusses the origin of Islam, the Quran, Prophet Muhammad, Prayer, Heaven and Hell.

  9. It talks about other religions. The Q&A is about Islam as the only religion, tolerance between religions and similarity with other religions. • The 3rd section talks about custom and culture, woman’s position in Islam, veil, marriage and polygamy. • Then, Esposito talks about violence and terrorism. He defines Jihad and discusses whether or not Islam permits terrorism and anti-Western sentiment.

  10. The fifth section explicates Islamic law, rejection of Western ideologies (i.e. capitalism and secularism) and Islamic banking. • He concludes the books with a discussion of Muslims in the West, their identities and problems.
