  1. Homerun Derby Using Graphs, Tables, and Linear and Exponential Functions to Model Growth

  2. OBJECTIVES • Model growth with graphs and tables. • Use this information to write linear and exponential functions. • Use this information to predict future events.

  3. Linear (Constant) Growth Grows by the same amount (constant growth rate) over a certain period of time. Has an equation y=ax+b. Exponential (Proportional) Growth Grows by the same percent (proportioanal growth rate) over a certain period of time. Has an equation y=ab^x Linear and Exponential Growth

  4. HOW TO FIND THE ACTIVITY Open Internet Explorer (YHS homepage). Point to YHS Information and choose YHS Staff. Click the link for subjects Mr. Sime teaches, and then click the link for Algebra II. Click the link for the Homerun Derby activity. Mark McGwire Hitting a Homerun.

  5. Examples of the files you will be using.

  6. Wrap-up • Do you think that these models are good for predicting home runs in future years? • Give reasons for your answer in Question 1. • What could we do to make the activity better or more accurate?
