CP/Lys Requirements – Maintenance

CP/Lys Requirements – Maintenance. Total CP requirement = CP m + CP g Growing horses: CP m (g/d) = BW kg x 1.44. CP/Lys Requirements – Growth. CP (g/d) = (BW kg x 1.44) + ((ADG g x 0.20)/E)/0.79 E = efficiency of protein use. Protein in gain. Protein digestibility.

  1. CP/Lys Requirements – Maintenance • Total CP requirement = CPm + CPg • Growing horses: • CPm (g/d) = BW kg x 1.44

  2. CP/Lys Requirements – Growth • CP (g/d) = (BW kg x 1.44) + ((ADG g x 0.20)/E)/0.79 • E = efficiency of protein use Protein in gain Protein digestibility

  3. CP/Lys Requirements – Growth • E = efficiency of protein use • 50% for 4-6 mo old • 45% for 7-8 mo old • 40% for 9-10 mo old • 35% for 11 mo old • 30% for 12 mo old or older

  4. CP/Lys Requirements – Growth • 4 mo old, 168 kg, 0.84 kg ADG • CP (g/d) = (BW kg x 1.44) + ((ADG g x 0.20)/E)/0.79 • E = 50% for 4-6 mo old • CP (g/d) = (168 x 1.44) + ((840 g x 0.20)/0.5)/0.79 • CP (g/d) = 242 g + 425 g = 667 g CP

  5. CP/Lys Requirements – Growth • CP = 667 g CP • Lysine (g/d) = CP (g/d) x 4.3% • Lys (g/d) = 667 x 0.043 = 28.7 g

  6. Developmental Orthopedic Disease • “all general growth disturbances resulting from any alteration in normal bone formation”

  7. Protein & Energy for Young Horses • Excess protein does not cause DOD • But…… • Feeding excess energy and keeping Lys:DE ratio correct will result in excess protein intake • The excess energy causes DOD

  8. Protein & Energy for Young Horses • Very rapid growth rate and excess energy intake are one of the primary causes of DOD

  9. Horse with Grade 3 Gastric Ulcers • Gastro Guard – very expensive • Current diet = Hay + 2 cups sweet feed • Dull coat, posture of “greyhound dog” • Stall rest prescribed • Solutions???
