  1. The Cognitive Approach AKA The Information Processing Approach

  2. Cognitive Psychology • Cognitive means to do with thought and thinking • Main areas of psychology include: • Cognitive development, or how thinking develops in children • Cognitive therapy, or how a therapist will try to persuade a patient that their thinking is irrational

  3. Information processing • The mind as an information processor, which processes information from the world and helps us make sense of what is happening. For example, how we remember things, how we recognise things and people and how we solve problems. • In some ways the mind can be compared with a computer, hence artificial intelligence and thinking machines

  4. An information flow diagram Registry

  5. An information flow diagram Registry Process

  6. An information flow diagram Registry Process Output

  7. An information flow diagram Registry Information from our senses

  8. An information flow diagram Registry Information from our senses The information is accepted by our mind as something we will work on

  9. Registry Process Information from our senses The information is accepted by our mind as something we will work on Our mind (the system) processes the information

  11. Process Registry Information from our senses Output or result The information is accepted by our mind as something we will work on Our mind (the system) processes the information

  12. How is this system like a computer?

  13. Artificial Intelligence • Can machines be intelligent? • Alan Turing, solver of the Enigma code in WWII, early computer scientist. • The Turing Test • ELIZA

  14. But can ELIZA understand?

  15. Thinking Machines • Gary Kasparov played chess against an IBM computer – and lost. • But is the computer intelligent? • Will machines beat man in the evolution stakes?
