  1. ThePaleontologist’s Puzzle Piecing Together the Past, One Bone at a Time

  2. Paleontology – the study of fossil organisms. • Paleontologist - someone who studies fossils. • Fossil Dig The excavation of a site of old soil and rocks to search for fossil animals http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu

  3. Absolute or Numerical Dating Using radiometric dating to determine the exact age of a fossil based on the decay of it’s isotopes • Relative Dating – Comparing one fossil to another to determine it’s age • Paleontologists “read” the layers of soil and rock to determine the relative age of that layer http://evolution.berkeley.edu

  4. K–T Boundary – Marks the end of the Cretaceous Period and the mass extinction of the dinosaurs and about 75% of all life on land Some animals, like Mammals, Reptiles, and Amphibians, survived virtually unchanged and evolved to become the dominant land animals

  5. Now, go and carry out your own fossil dig in the lab, and try to infer how dinosaurs that lived over 140 million years ago may have lived! http://www.trilobita.de/
