  1. Energy Efficiency & Solar Panels on the North Shore By Doug Horn

  2. Agenda • Introduction • Why Solar Photovoltaic Panels (PV) • Project Journey • Project Outcomes • Knowledge Gained • Summary • Q&A

  3. Introduction • 45 Year North Shore Resident • Greening for 25 years • First Real Job – Working Alberta Oil Rigs • Worked in Information Technology for over 20 years • Career path change in 2006 – BCIT Building Technology Two Year Programme • Green Building Coordinator – Light House Sustainable Building Centre

  4. Introduction • Bicycle is main mode of transportation • Try to incorporate green, sustainability, environmentally friendly practices into all aspects of life • Reduction & efficiency are always first on my task list • Love to lead by example • Love to learn from others

  5. Why Solar PV • PV Generate Electricity from Sunlight • Home Power Magazine • Interest in Renewable Energy • BC Hydro Net Metering – 2004 • PV panels seemed sexy and cool • Entrance into new career path • New house resource efficiency project • Solar Hot Water did not make sense

  6. Project Journey • Start Resource Efficiency – May 2003 • Determine present energy consumption (15kWh/d) • Set goal for electrical energy reduction (10kWh/d) • Identify & replace inefficient appliances • Replace incandescent bulbs with CFL, three way switches, task lighting • Power Bars on TV, Computer, Washer/Dryer • Solar clothes dryer • Determine final energy consumption (3kWh/d)

  7. Project Journey (cont’d) • System Design – May 2005 • BC Hydro Net Metering Agreement • Roof size and budget limitations • 1050 Watt, Grid Tied, Batteryless System • Vancouver Renewable Energy Coop • System Install – June 2006 • 5 people, two days • BC Hydro replaces analogue meter

  8. DC DISCONNECT AC DISCONNECT (EXTERIOR) INVERTER

  9. Project Outcome • Reduce electrical consumption to 1/10th average Canadian household • Produce 100% of all household electricity • Reduce NG consumption by 50% • Prove PV panels can work on North Shore • Article in Home Power Magazine & North Shore News • Project Public Interest

  10. Knowledge Gained • Every dollar invested in efficiency = ten dollars in PV system cost reduction • Over 200 year payback • Resource reduction was 5 times more effective than PV install • Behavioral changes have a larger impact than upgrades in energy efficiency • Small changes make a big difference but don’t require drastic lifestyles changes

  11. Summary • PV does work on the North Shore • Always put reduction of energy/resources before implementing alternatives means • PV panels, solar hot water, carbon off setting • Understand your energy usage in order to maximize reductions • Behavioral impacts are huge • Lots of small changes add up to a large reduction of resources
