  2. Are the ES&H issues being properly addressed for the fabrication, assembly and testing?

  3. STATUS Project Hazard Analysis was updated on 8/31/10 to support CD2 decision. It is being evaluated for additional changes prior to the October 2011 Lehman Review. Few (if any) changes are anticipated. Construction Health & Safety Plan (HASP) is being prepared. HASP will address safety hazards & protective measures for assembly of the Upgrade. Will comply with 10CFR851 (& PPPL ES&H Manual). JHAs will address hazards and protective measures at the job level. 3

  4. STATUS Security Vulnerability Assessment issued 6/09. Assessment found that Project presents no negative impact or increased cost to physical protection, personnel security, emergency operations or protective forces. This has not changed. Vulnerability Assessment does not need to be revised for CD-3 4

  5. Plan for Approval to Operate NSTX-U Prepare revised NSTX SAD & review/approval by PPPL Safety Review Committee. ACC performs safety review of planned NSTX operations with the Upgrades, including revised NSTX SAD, preoperational test plans, and operating procedures. Also, safety walkthroughs to review the physical aspects of the Upgrades. ACC reports findings to the PPPL ES&H Executive Board (ES&H/EB), including recommendation on revising the existing NSTX Safety Certificate authorizing NSTX operations with the Upgrades, and any relevant conditions or limitations. ES&H/EB issues revised NSTX Safety Certificate for Upgrade operations dependent on the outcome of DOE Operational Readiness Assessment (ORA). 5

  6. NSTX-U ES&H Considerations Compliance with occupational radiation exposure regulation (10CFR835) and DOE-approved PPPL Radiation Protection Program has been maintained during Neutral Beam (NB) decontamination work with PPPL Health Physics Division support. This will continue during NB Refurbishment, Transfer and Installation phases. Will ensure that work activities are conducted so as to minimize potential spread of tritium contamination and exposures of workers. All NSTX-U activities will be conducted using PPPL’s well-established policies and procedures that apply the principles and core functions of ISM. 6

  7. Summary The NSTX Upgrade Project has, and will continue to incorporate ES&H into its activities, including fabrication, assembly and testing, and will draw on the well-established ISM culture and infrastructure at PPPL. 7
